Flaubert has written a masterpiece. He seems to really understand each of his characters. We may not agree with them or respect them, in some cases, we may wish them a nasty carriage accident, but they are all believable, true to who they are. And the narration does not include judgment on any of them, simply shows us a story and allows us to form our own opinion.
As a product of its time, Madame Bovary was scandalous, pornographic, yet survived because it was so well-written, so relatable. Read with a modern view, this book indicts the society without blame to the victims. Lives are lived differently today, but people are still the same.

Hard to get into, but the 2nd half is interesting.

Oh, goddamn my pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand. Taking mine, but it's been promised to another 🫠.

Banger

It seems to me that Bovary is both a cautionary tale and a lament.

The caution has to do with seeking happiness outside ourselves, and with the "ethics," or lack thereof, of predatory lenders.

The lament, whether intentional on the part of Flaubert or simply experienced by modern readers, is the limitations imposed on women by the mores of the societies in which they find themselves. The values do not change much over course of a hundred years, and some persist to some degree in some societies even now (a watered down statement if ever there were one).

A sampling of women who struggle to deal with with the restrictions of their milieus, follows, below. Others can add additional characters, and likely a number whose dates of introduction succeed these.

This is not actually the edition of Bovary to which I listened, since the new translation by Lydia Davis is not yet in goodreads.

Actually really hard to put down once I got into it.

Rouva Bovary kertoo aviorikoksesta realismin perinnettä vaalien.
