This book is a masterpiece of characterization, although at times his descriptions are a little too wordy. Beautiful turns of phrase that devastate you alongside the plot events. Love Flaubert’s use of free indirect discourse.

La verdad es que la primera mitad me ha parecido lenta y un poco aburrida, aunque a partir de la segunda mitad empieza a ser mucho más interesante. Y, lo siento mucho pero al final taaaaantas descripciones y taaaan detalladas cansan un poco. Sé que ese era el estilo literario de la época pero hoy en día, al menos a mi, no me gusta nada.

Posle mesec dana čitanja, mislila sam da će mi biti lakše kad završim priču o Emi Bovari. Razvlačila sam ovu knjigu, a bilo je dana kad je bukvalno nisam ni dirala. Nije mi bilo jasno zašto se u suštini nije desilo ništa na više od pola knjige. A upravo to je ono što je Flober radio da bi bolje razumeli Emu.
Kad sam je završila, jedno dvadeset minuta sam, uznemirena, zurila u zid. Nisam imala nikakvu predstavu o radnji romana kada sam počela sa čitanjem i nisam znala šta da očekujem. Ipak, na mene je ostavio toliko snažan utisak da poslednjih dana ne mogu da izbacim porodicu Bovari iz glave.
Knjiga se sigurno može tumačiti na više načina, a za mene je najznačajniji sledeći zaključak: s vremena na vreme se treba osvrnuti i biti zadovoljan onim što imaš!

I wanted to like this book more than I ended up actually enjoying it. Actually, the first third wasn’t too bad, but the rest? Oh my.
I think I actually ended up finishing it out of spite because oh it started to drag. Emma is not one of my favourite characters or even on of my least favourite characters. She comes into a category all of her own; people I would cross the street to avoid. How are we supposed to feel sorry for poor Emma who spends the entire novel whinging that she doesn’t live in the heights of luxury, having multiple affairs, lying to her devoted husband, getting the family into debt and ruining herself?
Beats me, but I didn’t. I get the moral of the books is be happy with what you have, but jeez.

Puedo reconocer el clásico que es,pero aun así no ha conseguido en ningun momento que yo me interese por la historia o los personajes y me ha parecido aburrido...
My teachers recommended this book, so I thought I had to read it. I liked the story and the writing style as well. The plotline itself was also nice to read, but sometimes it was a bit boring * to be honest.
