Somewhat heavy on the description, but always interesting. I especially liked the way Flaubert captured the disgust she had for her husband, and all the petty ways he annoyed her...and how she grew weary of adultery. My favorite line was about how adultery can be as mundane as marriage.
I picked this up because of "Madame Bovary's Daughter" and was glad I did. To me, she was a sad figure, always searching for something just out of reach, and perhaps not even attainable. Interesting how human nature has not changed much since this was written.

My french teacher recommended this one to me - she said it was kind of boring and hard to read. Well, I love her to bits but she was completely wrong on this one. I really really like it!!!
Of course, it has some boring-ish parts (like most classic books do) but the plot made it up.
I loved Emma, all her annoyingness and all, and how she wanted so much more than her provincial life (yes, that's a quote from beauty and the beast sns).
100% recommend!

4.5 just cause of the yapping

I read this during a particularly difficult November. It did nothing to cheer me up; being alternately dragged and swept along with Emma Bovary was pure masochism. But the masochism did not arise from any fault with the novel.

I discourage you from watching the recent movie adaptation without reading the book first, at least. The movie wrecks the intent of the ending.
