Interesting that a story written in the mid-1800s has all the themes of current novels: adultery, lust, misguided love, power issues, self-esteem issues, and more. This is a new interpretation of Flaubert's classic. The prose is beautiful, but gets lengthy. Lots and lots of adjectives included to describe scenes. In today's light, it is a tame read, but one can see why it was such a stunner back then. I know it could be analyzed indepth for various bits of significance, but here I will simply say this is a story of a woman thwarted by her powerlessness in society who is married to a man who does not meet her emotional needs, and unfortunately she seeks happiness with one man after another who lets her down. Ultimately her reckless behaviour ruins her family and ultimately it is her child who suffers. It was a tedious read and felt a flog in places. You can tell it’s a female character written by a man!

ALSO LOOOOOVEDDD THIS BOOOOkkk. Will warn you that at least for me it took me a while to get into the story. The first 1/3rd was a bit dull but then you get into EMMA and her story is what got me hooked. The drama. The scandal. The quintessential queen of bipolar idgaf.
Rather tedious in some parts (took me about 100 pages to get interested) but overall a fairly engrossing read. Now I know what all the buzz is about. Or what is was about 150 years ago...
Le podría haber dado perfectamente 5 estrellas, porque es una obra maestra de la Literatura por méritos propios... pero Emma Bovary. Emma Bovary es probablemente uno de los personajes más insufribles que nadie ha creado nunca. Y la cuestión es que su mera existencia eleva la novela a la categoría de clásico. Emma Bovary es real. De hecho, todo el mundo conoce a una Emma Bovary: una pava infantil y melodramática que no sabe lo que quiere y se cree más lista que nadie y a la que todo el mundo engaña porque en realidad es más tonta que meter los dedos en el enchufe.
Emma es un ser vivo, una persona. Una persona a la que me hubiera gustado estrangular en algunas partes de la novela.
Aparte de eso, el libro tiene un ritmo sorprendentemente ágil para ser tan profuso en descripciones, y ello se debe a que las descripciones sirven para ambientar las escenas. Es una novela muy cinematográfica, hay momentos en que incluso ves el plano.
También me sorprendió mucho el sentido del humor. Yo no soy muy aficionada al humor francés, pero lo cierto es que Flaubert tiene un tipo de humor que me gusta y le da un bienvenido toque de ligereza a una historia tan melodramática. Y no es que sea excesivamente melodramática, se podría decir que el autor incluso se muestra sobrio donde podría haberse dejado llevar, pero por supuesto tiene su carga dramática, es la historia que es.
Con todo (especialmente la propia Emma) es un libro que he disfrutado mucho y me alegro de haber leído.

I really disliked the main character Emma, because she’s one of those female characters written by a male author in a way you can’t stand her. She’s stupid, naive, selfish and not a nice person. It’s possible to make an unlikeable person interesting to read about! Not in this book, though…
The last third of the book, where Emma is spiraling out of control, is just so exquisitely done.

A classic, definitely worth the read, or listen. Also Flaubert's manuscripts are fascinating. The fifth star is there for the manuscripts!
