Into the Wilderness

I really made a valiant effort to finish this chuck-o-book. I made it almost 400 pages in before I just didn't care a single once what happened to any of the characters. The steamy parts were fun, if not a bit dramatic, and if I had to read one more long description about how beautiful the landscape is I would've screamed. The conflict wasn't too exciting, and there was a huge list of characters to keep track of. Points for the Outlander reference though!

Progress report 2: abandoned around 75%
I kept checking this book out on audio and plodding along. But it was feeling more and more like an assignment, like a chore. I finally gave up--I just wasn't interested in the characters. Perhaps, in some parallel universe, I read this series first, and loved it, then discovered Outlander and loved it even more. But this is not that world, and this series is paling in comparison. May try again some day.

Progress report 1: ~60% progress
I started reading this book because it has a 4.1 rating and because it was recommended for fans of Outlander. I hadn't realized it was Outlander fanfiction--I was not expecting the blatant reference of Jamie, Claire, and Ian when it came up!

This is set 1790s in the New York wilderness, I think some parts go up into Canadian territory too. Elizabeth is sort of a weird character for me: she is both naive and feisty, prim and passionate. This makes me oscillate between annoyance and admiration. But she can't hold up to Claire, so overall I'm not overly impressed.
This book also has a bit of a Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman feel to it, in that there is a country setting with a variety of "classed" and educated citizens. Plus Nathaniel is totally the Sully character, even if Elizabeth isn't a Michaela.
Elizabeth's family is annoying and many characters feel a bit stock.
There is lust pretty immediately, but it felt like the romance developed just a little too quickly. I was describing this book to my husband, and I said that the two main characters are
Spoiler plotting the elopement
and it's only about 25% of the way through, where this same point in most average romance books is about 75%. I was wondering what the rest of the 600+ pages were going to be about.
Additionally, the main tension
Spoiler seems to be all litigation so far?
So that's not very fun.

This was recommended for people who like Outlander and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately it is almost just as long as the Outlander books but I really enjoyed it while waiting for the next Outlander book. Ian, Claire, and Jamie also get a mention in this book so that was fun. There is no time travel in this book. It takes place in the late 1700s in New York. Elizabeth has just come over from England to live with her father. She falls in love with a man who lives with the local Indian tribe. We all know the tensions between the whites and Indians so of course there are dangers there. You always knew something bad was going to happen whenever one walked off alone. In an almost 900 page book there was plenty of danger. I am looking forward to the next one.

"You'll never be invisible again. Not to me, never to me"

I really enjoyed this book. I had tried reading it back in the fall, but I was still mending from finishing all of the Outlander Series. Once I read that Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian were mentioned in this book, I decided to give it another go. I fell in love with Nathaniel! I'm very much looking forward to read what happens in the rest of the series!

This book was alright - a solid 3 stars. Not spectacular and not awful. It feels like an attempt to capture the magic of Outlander in a similar but also very different book.

Elizabeth and Nathaniel just aren't Jamie and Claire. While it isn't fair to expect them to be it would be nice if they had some chemistry as a couple. But they just felt flat to me. As individuals they we're alright but still not super compelling.

The writing is good, the setting well explored, and the secondary characters very well developed. For me though, this book is just missing that spark that brings a medicore book up to pretty dang good levels.

I might pick up the next one but I'm in no rush to do so.

I was introduced to this series because of my love for the Outlander Series. I am so glad I started this series.

Set in the part of the world that a branch of my family comes from, during a time when they were living there. Read it based on that, but really enjoyed the story and the characters. Overall really good read. I'll now be looking for the next in the series.

When fellow Outlander lovers recommend a book to you, you immediately purchase, inhale every word as fast as you can, and feel incomplete when it’s over.

Elizabeth, a proud spinster, moves from her aunt’s home in England to the backwoods of NY where her father has set his home. Determined to stay single and become a teacher, Elizabeth goes through many important changes turning her from an ignorant hopeful to a seasoned romantic.

Minus .5 because I could have used more chemistry between the loving couple—still can’t figure out why…how…they began liking each other?
