Great book. Extremely well written. Anybody else catch the Outlander reference? (bottom of pg 252) "The white witch claire fraser and her husband the red-haired scot."
I really enjoyed this story. Elizabeth is darling, a lovely heroine to follow. The book is a long one, but I flew through it. There wasn't a lot of dead time or "filler" sections; every chapter was worth reading.
I was recommended this book to read by a friend who knew I read some of the Outlander series. It seems like there are a lot of comparisons made about the two. Personally, besides the fact that both series are well written and researched and of epic proportions, I don't find them that similar. For one thing, Elizabeth is such a more endearing character in my opinion. The main reason I gave up on the Outlander series was the fact that Claire just came off as completely self obsessed to me. She felt like the "star" of her relationship, and poor Jamie (who is a wonderful character) is never treated as her equal. Additionally, in my opinion, Gabaldon goes a bit darker than necessary in her stories. Don't get me wrong, I like dark stories, too... But I guess I feel all the rapes and such in the outlander series are a bit much. Let's face it, if Gabaldon wrote this book, Elizabeth would have been raped at least twice and Nathaniel would probably have had a hand chopped off or something. Overall, I prefer this series (so far) to the Outlander series, so if you were staying away from this series because you didn't like outlander and you heard they were similar, go ahead and give this one a chance.
And I love Robbie McLachlan! What a sweet character :)

It's like Outlander!!
If the characters were boring and unlikeable. Also, there's brief mention of Jaime, Claire, and Ian at their wedding feast, but otherwise there's nothing.
Similarities = time period (ish), Scots,
Differences = interesting plot, compelling characters
I did like Curiosity, the dog, and most of the other characters. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ guess that counts for something?

Good grief. I think this must be the closest I've ever come to reading a romance novel, and I'm not a fan. Add to that the fact that the book was really long, and that the heroine's sensibilities struck me as far too modern for her to be a product of 1700's England. Not so good.
Overall enjoyable but dragged a bit in some sections. I'll probably continue the series but I'm not itching to get my hands on the next one for awhile.
Favourite Quote: 'And Nathaniel saw something he had forgotten about women: that words can do the same work as hands and mouths and a man’s body, that she was as undone by his admission of desire as she had been by his kiss.'
You will fall in love with Nathaniel, who is living as an Indian Mohawk in America’s “Brave New World. Elizabeth Middleton arrives in the small town of Paradise, her father has induced her to come with a promise of her fulfilling her life-long dream of being a teacher. However her father has other plans for her, a plan to marry her off in order to pay off some debts. Dr Todd is willing to do anything to get this land. But she isn't attracted to Dr Todd, she's attracted to Nathaniel.
Don't be fooled into thinking this is just a love story, it is so much more and Lake in the Clouds became as real to me as any place I've ever visited IRL. This is a wonderful story of American history, that is told in the most sensual way.
This is a long book being 876 pages, I started reading it in August just before my Dad passed away and I was unable to read on. I finally picked it up again today and finished it, I was about 2/3 of the way through it. I had forgotten some little details but had no problem following the story. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
