When I Break by Kendall Ryan

Maybe I'm just getting bored with the typical characters in the NA book genre, but I'm over reading about the virginal 20 year olds. I am an extremely social person and have only met one in the real world. And she wasn't a virgin because of some ridiculous crap experience, or from some terrible trauma, but because of religious beliefs. That is so much more believable to me. Secondly I am kind of getting tired of mini series. Why can't it just be one big book? I'm not going to spend the same amount of money for two hundred pages when I could get five hundred. I need resolution and completion to my fictional stories.
Last but not least, I found McKenna to be boring and over the top. She's a sexual addiction counselor and never had sex?? Huh?
I have read other works by Kendall Ryan and enjoyed them. But I will not continue this series.

4.5 stars. Damn cliffhangers! And to end on such an angsty moment... I love angst, but my heart is still aching for McKenna. I knew I should have held off reading this one until the next one was out, but I love Kendall Ryan's books, and this one was burning a hole in my kindle, so I decided to bite the bullet and read it. Now I'm dying cuz I have to wait for the next book. I know what I'm hoping for, but based on the description of the next book, I don't think I'm going to get it.

A few things made this a 2.5 star book for me. One is that it's a cliffhanger... One I wasn't expecting. Admittedly I hate them, and had I realized, may not have started reading. I was left wanting some more of the characters intentions and motivations. There was a lot of showing us what they were doing and how they were changing but I felt it needed more support through telling us the characters feelings or reasons behind some of their decisions. I'm not a huge fan of promiscuous heroes but knew what I was getting into here. Still, Knox continuing to have sex with other women throughout this book turned me off in major way.

I enjoyed the characters, and their chemistry. But, I felt like the heroine did not have hang ups where it would make sense... She's a virgin, with a sexual experience that left her feeling unwanted and yet she has no major hang ups about sexual encounters with the hero. I felt a little angst would have bumped up the emotions in the book and added some interest, but I am also a total sucker for sexually repressed or uptight characters. Also, she's only 22 with a degree and apparently enough experience to lead a sexual addicts group? I'm not sure we are in the same reality here. There is definitely not as much sex in this as the synopsis may have you believe. Overall, I liked this one, but probably not enough to pay another $4 a book for the others in the series.

Genre: new adult
Hero: 6/10
Heroine: 5/10
Steam level: 5/10
Writing: 7/10
Cliffhanger: yes
Overall rating: 2.5 stars

I really enjoyed this, despite the abrupt ending. I knew it was a cliffhanger, and it definitely left you hanging. The downside for me was, possibly only my edition, the formatting. There were no distinct chapters or proper chapter formatting in my Kobo edition, and that was rather annoying. In my edition it kind of looked like one really long chapter-the entire book. Also, was Jaxon's name Trace at some point and changed? A few times it read "without a Jaxon of..." or "losing all Jaxon..", which makes no sense. I'm thinking his name was possibly changed with find and replace, and that replaced some trace's that should have been there.

Knox was kind of a dick, which was to be expected, and I'm completely on the fence with McKenna. I'm not digging how weak she is. She very quickly changed her "this is inappropriate" tune. Still, I liked it enough to want to know what happens next!

I'd give it a 3.5, rather than just a 3.

I was excited to read this one, I love Kendall Ryan and the summary sounded awesome. While I didn’t have a problem with the book, I did enjoy reading it, it was too short and ended so suddenly and abruptly.
I like endings that either are a cliff hanger or sort of fade out, this was neither. It just stopped. I was confused as hell why it ended there. It was more like the end of a chapter instead of the end of the book.
Anyway, it was a fun read. Not so much any steaminess but lots of sexual tension and build up between the hero and heroine so I’m looking forward to reading the next book.
