I really like Zentner's style-- his rural, southern characters are beautifully described and the language throughout is lyrical. Papaw was elegant and raw and my favorite character. Even though I knew how this story would unfold and end, I was still captivated by the coming of age of Cash and Delaney and their prep school friends. Also, the celebration of the power of poetry was moving. I honestly don't know how many students would connect with this book, but many of my adult friends will love it.

Loved the book. If anything I wish it were longer. But I really connected with the characters and loved to hear their different voices. The poetic nature helped a lot too.

A beautiful meditation on grief and belonging and the power of poetry. Even before the main character discovers the latter, his narration is filled with beautiful images and language. His journey from self-doubt to confidence is believable, and his affection for his rural hometown lovely. Highly recommended.
