Painful and relatable. Maybe don't read in public, or in your parents' living room on Thanksgiving morning. But do read.
4.5 stars. Touching! I appreciated the insights of understanding how we change and how your understanding of your past experiences changes (and, the life of a millennial: regretting things you've written in a public space).

I think there are simply important people in our lives. They don't always stay important. They don't always stick around. But the point at which we meet them, the point on the grid where our lives intersect, is a sacred thing. It makes them 'the one' in that moment; just because that moment ends, it doesn't mean it's any less special.I have followed JP on social media for a fair bit and have found his previously-Grindr-affiliated but now independent advice column Hola Papi quite fun and oftentimes insightful. Fair enough to say I was excited for this collection of essays.
In line of these types of books, JP takes us on an embellished autobiographical ride filled with small nuggets of wisdom that relate to things from coming out, growing up queer (but not), growing up Mexican (but not), and trying to figure stuff out along the way. He writes of his failed relationships (abusive, elusive, or simply not meant to be). Of trying to figure out his identity (from clothes to the way in which his heritage as an American Mexican influences his daily life). Of giving advice to strangers on the internet for a living. As expected from his column, this too was mix of sweet banter with savoury advice. Can recommend!
I couldn’t connect with the writing style. The closing of each story with a “lesson” didn’t work for me. But it was a quick easy read.
I absolutely loved this simultaneously playful and wise book of stories. The writing voice drew me in instantly, and it felt like I was hanging with a good friend. I already am looking forward to more books by Brammer!

From the first essay, there were times that I could not breathe. Brammer is masterful at using story to impart wisdom. One of my top books of 2021.
