I read this book several years ago and it intrigued me. I bought an awesome hardcover edition and so I decided to read it again while listening to it on Audible. What an excellent reading experience. I think I even enjoyed it more the second time around.

This is a story about an English lawyer who goes to investigate the home of a deceased client. Of course, the home is very remote and in a desolated marshy area of Great Britain. It quite reminded me of a classic Victorian Gothic mystery. It is terrifying in its own right but in the sense of an old English ghost story as opposed to a Stephen King book or something more modern. It would be an absolutely delightful Halloween read.

Listened on audible (this one is free) and while the writing was just so-so; the production value, narrator, sound effects & music were SO good!!

Lightly chilling, and definitely well recreated the style of an earlier era. The problem with that is the structure of sentences becomes so elaborate that it can be an awkward read. I liked the book still but it is a bit laborious.

Honestly properly spooky and scary

A bit of a lacklustre ghost story- the ghost just didn’t seem that frightening and her reasons and actions were… confusing considering her motivations. Disappointing

The reason I decided to read this book was because I want to see the film and I cannot see an adaptation until I have read the book.

I am not a fan of older style horror and found this book really difficult to get into. Although it is a short story the first two or three chapters are there purely to set the scene and are a little bit slow, however once I got through them I finished the rest of the book within a few hours. The story is easy to follow and to be honest I figured out the basic plot line early on. Even though this was the case it didn't stop me from enjoying the rest of the book, the writing was brilliant and full of imagery that pulled you into the situation and into the turmoil that the protagonist was going through.

Finally if you are not a fan of old style horror I feel that this is a perfect book in order to taste the genre.
