This is one of my favorites, partly because Nigel Bathgate is less of a nuisance than usual, but primarily because the cast of characters is enjoyable. Troy isn't in this one, although Alleyn writes her a letter, but we have two characters - Dinah and Henry - who are in love which serves as a surrogate for Alleyn and Troy being in love. And we have the vampy, actress type (a type Alleyn has fallen for in early books) whose charms, thankfully, fail to captivate Alleyn.

Listened to the audiobook. Enjoyed it. Not one of my favorites of hers, but wanted to listen for some of the characters who reoccur in other novels. The middle-aged old maid theme jars a bit in this day and age, but the murder itself is clever and the unraveling even more so.

My first Ngaio Marsh and now I want to tear through them all. Great audiobook! Loved the original, novel way this murder was accomplished.

This was a enjoyable and easy listen. Marsh paints a vivid picture of the petty jealousies and human weaknesses of the residents of a English village. The crime is clever. I won’t hear Rachmaninov’s prelude without recalling this novel. The mentally-unstable-spinster-in-love-with-the-local-vicar-trope is a tad dated, though, and some of the characters were standard casting for a cozy mystery. I do like Roderick Alleyn and his team.

3.5 stars for a good, standard mystery.
