I would give this book a higher rating because I really enjoyed it, however I cannot get past what happened to Bo. Hunting for survival is one thing, but Bo deserved better.

Very interesting and different book... don’t know that I loved it but I also didn’t hate it

Very enjoyable! I think I would have liked this more if I hadn’t read Mindy McGinnis’ Be Not Far From Me a few weeks ago! Either way, I’m here for this mini trend of girl survival stories.

I loved the survival parts of the book and wish we got to learn more about that. I did not get invested in the dad's death and the revenge plot afterwards. And why couldn't Bo survive as well???

Fantastic survival story with a girl who is amazingly strong, despite tremendous odds against her. It is a very bleak story at times (from the opening paragraph, when she writes a letter that she hopes will be found by someone after she dies of exposure, starvation, or animal attack!) but ultimately very positive. Great transformational story, too, as Jess really grows into her strength after starting out as a very weak, injured, inept-at-wilderness-skills urbanite; by the end of the story she can survive anything, anywhere in the starkest of wilderness environments. Give this to readers who are ready for a much more intense version of [b: Hatchet|50|Hatchet (Brian's Saga, #1)|Gary Paulsen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1385297074l/50._SX50_.jpg|1158125].

Oh my goodness. What a page turner, I stayed up late reading it because I had to know what happens. I definitely recommend this book.
adventurous mysterious medium-paced

When Jess and her mother are in a car crash which leaves her mother dead and her with a pile of physical limitations and injuries, she's sent to live with the father she's never known in Alaska. Or at least, she believes it's Alaska. She's picked up by a man working for her dad and deposited with him, and that's when we learn that the cabin they're sharing will be burned down and Jess will be left to survive on her own in this remote area.

Told in a before-after format for part of the book, Marshall's debut is an excellent, compelling survival adventure novel. It's well paced, and the setting depicted is rendered exactly how it feels to Jess: desolate, alone, desperate.

Jess's voice is excellent. It's the perfect blend of snark and grief, sadness sprinkled with moments of hope that what she leaves behind in her journal will help someone piece together her story when she's gone.

Note: there's a dog and the dog will die. It's sad, but for the plot, it makes sense and doesn't feel manipulative. There are also some men who die, but that's not really sad because they deserved it and that also does not feel manipulative.

Engrossing YA story of strength and survival that doesn’t shy away from the costs of our actions.
