better than i expected, probably would not have read if it was not on the one elliot rosewater book list tbh

Amazing amazing amazing. I want to scream from the rooftops and recommend this book to everyone I know! I devoured it in 3 hours and it left me wanting more, but not in a bad way!

This book had a bit of a slower start, but once I got into it, I really couldn't put it down.  I liked the setting, and I really liked Jess, the main character.  I enjoyed how the book started out going with the before and the after and seeing the contrast between where Jess's story started and how it played out.  Seeing her struggle to survive made for an exciting story.  I also really liked the dog in this story.  He was so sweet and protective.  I was really rooting for them.

This book pulled me in like few others recently. The storyline was tight and well edited.

This was really (unexpectedly) good! When I took this out of the library I didn't realize this was YA, and honestly, I find that most YA thrillers suck. Fortunately, that wasn't the case with this book. Aside from the set-up, this was a pretty run-of-the mill survival story, but the author did a great job of making it realistic and compelling. She also did a great job with Jess' character. Since Jess is the only character for 90% of this book, it would have sucked if she was annoying, but that definitely wasn't the case. She was a bit whiny at the beginning, but I understood why she was acting the way that she did. And she definitely grew a ton during the book.

I'd definitely recommend this to people! It would be a great book to read in the winter by a fire.

SpoilerI really do wish the dog hadn't died though.

A lot like Hatchet, except she has more survival skills and there’s a thriller twist where people are after her.

I'm waffling between 2 and 3 stars - I think I wanted more of a pure survival story. (But that cover is so gorgeous!)

Poor poor Jess. Unmoored and permanently injured at the beginning, having lost her mom, she is just beginning to get close to her dad when he's killed, leaving her to fend for herself in the harsh Canadian wilderness. With her injured leg, small amount of survival skills, and her father's dog, she spends months waiting for rescue.

Jess as a character was great - believable, strong, determined, but scared and prone to hopelessness. I loved that Marshall gave her a disability. Even though she didn't know much, she figured it out and stuck to it.

But Marshall skipped over a lot of Jess actually figuring it out and the minutia of survival. I wanted every detail of Jess checking the traps, learning how to hunt, feeding Bo, keeping herself warm. That's why I read survival stories!
