Like all short story collections, this had a few uneven spots, but it was by and large super cute and affirming and lovely. It felt a little heavy in terms of wlw representation vs anything else, so I wish they'd pulled in some other types of narratives, but honestly that Ashley Herring Blake at the end made the whole thing worth it. Sob.

Super cute book, honestly!
This is probably the most diverse middle grade book I've ever read! Each short story focuses on a kid with a different identity and experience. There's nonbinary, neopronouns, gay, lesbian, bi, trans, squishes (first time ever seeing that representation in a book!) and more!
I wrote a much longer review detailing the content warnings and representations of each story, but Goodreads didn't save my draft and I had to return it to the library. Grrr! Check out other reviews for those.
5/5 stars. I adore this and wish I had this when I was a kid :)

groundbreaking. necessary. beautiful. powerful. An essential addition to every collection.
This Is Our Rainbow: 16 Stories of Her, Him, Them and Us is a book that I knew without doubt was a book that I had to read and would love and I wasn't left wanting.
There is a shortage of books for those who read middle grade tales that focus solely on being members of the LGBTQ+ community. Books that say it is perfectly okay to be who you are, that we as individuals are important to the life we live in and the stories that are told.
I found the way that each tale was done via a different medium both refreshing and excellently done as they would compliment one another and highlight the particular tale. The artwork of the cover is exquisitely done and again reflective of how diverse the world is now in the twenty-first century and has been for some time although sadly, forgotten or ignored by the majority of authors, illustrators and the world as a whole.
I truly hope that This Is Our Rainbow: 16 Stories of Her, Him, Them and Us is the first of many books for middle-grade readers and helps them feel the acceptance and joy of being who they are far sooner than many of us who came before.

The only fair way to discuss an anthology of such diverse writing styles. genres, and characters is to go piece-meal by story. The collection is considerably strong when I evaluate it as a whole and I recommend it to fans of junior short stories and queer characters.
The Purr-cle of Life: 4/5
Loved that Alex Gino opened this book with a story that is more passively queer in a natural, accepted way and more about grief and new love. I liked it and it set a good tone for the collection.
Girl's Best Friend: 4/5
I hadn't heard of a squish until this story and loved seeing it as the focus as this read. It's very overtly queer platonic/ace to me. Cute though weird furry vibes?
The Makeover: 4/5
So cute!! This one follows young queer kids going thrifting together and helping a new friend figure out their aesthetic. Cozy ghost
