I saw a Tik Tok about this book that made me want to read it. Catching me with the "two people who tried to give each other the world and failed."
But honestly I got none of that.
The book had some captivating parts. But mostly I was left confused. By the ending sentence which I presume was suppose to be a "mic drop" moment, I felt more like "...umm what?"
I would still like to continue to read more by this author but I think this book was a bit too slow paced for me. I'm still glad I read it and I throughly enjoyed the Indian Mythology and history within this.
Elena and Yassen just seemed....forced. By the last 20% of the book their love trope was thrown in and it was SO RUSHED. It was like Samson didn't even exist which I was not a fan of.
Overall there were moments I enjoyed but for about 70% of the book I was confused and kind of pushing myself through to finish it.
I would have liked to see more of Leo's decline with his power status. And I would have liked more about Yassen. His POVs were quite interesting and his character really started to shine in the last quarter of the book only for it to end pretty quickly.

Got an arc from the publisher (though I had the original version!)
I was lucky enough to meet the author when this was published under its original name, and I’m so happy to see her success with this new trad pub version.
I remember originally this was comped to Dune meets The Poppy War and I guess but it’s so much richer than those comps can convey so if you want a new fantasy novel to stomp all over your heart, get to it!

How I loved this book. It’s true the world building is complex and so many things are intricate little details that you can easily miss them, yet that’s what made it so amazing. The best part of this book is how real the political issues of the world are, strongly resonating with the geopolitical issues our own reality is facing today.
I also deeply loved how imperfect the characters are, and their own motivations were so clear, and one could understand where they stemmed from. I just wished for more pining from Yassen and Elena. But the book was amazing, I deeply loved it and cannot wait for the sequel.
