I felt like a dolt due to the number of words I had to look up, but I'm better for it, and it was worth it.

The style of writing and some content (racism, sexism) has not not aged well. The description of surroundings and objects was entirely too long for my taste - I found myself nodding off at some points.

However, the basic ideas and concepts, and the entire world that this author created, is astounding. It is so in depth, fantastical and unique, unlike anything I've ever read before.

Lovecraft is also very good at telling a solid horror story. He foreshadows and tells the timeline of events in such a way that the end is always a jolt or shock.

I can see why so many authors were inspired by his work.

A fairly decent collection. Lovecraft uses pretty much the same formula and the same language for most of his stories. It's pretty predictable most of the time. A learned man who is a firm skeptic comes across mysterious circumstances, he investigates looking for a rational and sane explanation, weird things happen, he tries to rationalize when he should probably be running the other way, even weirder things happen, finally he has to concede that something crazy and otherworldly is going on... or he's just gone stark raving mad. His narrators typically all use the same language, with a particular love for words like eldritch. Despite this, there's something creepy about his stories. It's hard to figure out why, they just are. Lovecraft is worth reading so at the very least you know what people are talking about when they reference Cthulu and the Great Old Ones. Cthulhu fhtagn!

Not a huge fan of the style of writing but I am a fan of the stories, so this is hard to rate, because 100 years ago this would have been an excellent read for me, but I would like more these days.
