Vaikeaa arvioida, kuinka monta tähteä tälle kirjalle antaisin. Päädyin kahteen, koska mielessäni se on jonkinlainen kompromissi.
Luonnollisesti Jumalaisessa näytelmässä näkyy, että se on kirjoitettu jo jonkin aikaa sitten. Koin kuitenkin pääseväni sisään tekstiin, kun hetken olin totutellut siihen. Toki apunani oli kirjan ohessa olevat selitykset kohtiin, jotka voivat olla nykyihmisille vaikeita ymmärtää. Ajoittain olisin kaivannut selitystä eri kohdalle, vaikka myönnettäköön, että välillä kekittymiseni ei ollut tarvittavan intensiivistä.
Yritin lukea Helvetti-osion joskus lukiossa yhtä kurssia varten, mutta prokrastinoin sitä sitten niin paljon, etten lukenut sitä. Ylpeyttäni pisti ikävästi, kun opettajani totesi ymmärtäväisesti kirja olevan aika vaikea ja kunnianhimoinen tavoite, ja minun tietysti täytyi olla hänen kanssaan samaa mieltä. Enhän voinut myöntää, että en ollut oikeastaan edes lukenut kirjaa muutamaa laulua enempää. Tuolloin vannoin lukevani kaikki kolme osiota joku päivä, ja tässä sitä nyt ollaan. Tosin haluan vähintäänkin uskotella itselleni, että kyseessä oikeasti on kiinnostukseni historiaan ja mahdollisuus nähdä, miten tuolloin asioita on saatettu ajatella. Sainkin kirjasta irti, että me ihmiset olemme pohjimmiltamme kuitenkim aika samanlaisia, vaikkakin myöa hyvin erilaisia.
Paratiisi oli vähiten miellyttävä kokemus, ja eniten pidin Kiirastulesta. Helvetti oli minun makuuni turhan tiivis. En ole varma, vaikuttiko Paratiisin mielyttävyyteen oman elämäni harhauttajat vai Danten selityksiä maailman toiminnasta, jotka olisivat kaivanneet paljon keskittymistä. Voin kuitenkin sanoa, että tiedän suunnilleen mitä tapahtui, vaikken kaikkia yksityiskohtia ymmärtänytkään. Ilokseni lämpenin hiukan myös Beatricelle, vaikka alussa hän vaikuttikin turhan ymmärtämättömältä ja mustavalkoiselta.

Ángel Battistessa's work is absolutely remarkable and worth of all the praise it gets.This edition is particularly good, since it has the original language and a good translation for readers to compare, Something I'll definitely do when I learn italian. And the presence of detailed notes to get deeper into the context. I'm not looking forward to see pictures in a book in most of the cases, but you can't refuse to admire even those details when those are some part of Doré's work.
I recommend getting into [b:Vita Nuova|540422|Vita Nuova|Dante Alighieri|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1175637599s/540422.jpg|21465411] first, so you won't be surprised of the high idolization Dante has for Beatrice, his love. The heavy usage of numbers, complicated metaphors astronomy related information, and other things to justify certain circumstances, are present as it was usual during medieval age.
When it comes to the work, I want to be as fair as I can, but my english level and the obvious subjectivity won't help much. There's some overly political content. Sometimes it can come out as prententious, since Dante declares himself as a future literary legend (in the fourth chant already, when he meets most of his literary idols).
The imagery is quite fascinating once you get into it. A must read, because it's an absolute classic that paved the way for many authors to come, Rimbaud, Borges, and couple of others.
Surprisingly all his enemies (or almost all of them) are in hell, while his lover(?) Beatrice is in Heaven right next to Virgin Mary and acts as his guide in the way to salvation.
There's some things that might be seen as inaccuracy as Dante talks about Odysseus without having the original book in his hands as the Iliad and the Odyssey haven't been discovered until many years after of his death. Of course, he didn't know greek either, and his only sources were the latin ones.

No pensé que fuera a terminarlo ni que me fuera a gustar.
El Infierno y el Purgatorio fueron las partes que más disfruté, ya que el Paraíso está muy cargado de religión y simbolismos (mucho más que lo anterior).
La narración no es rebuscada (como en "El Paraíso Perdido") y es muy exacta, todo tiene un significado, todo tiene una referencia. Para entenderlo del todo es necesario buscar notas, personajes e historia.

Wasn't as hard a read as I was expecting. Inferno is definitely the best of the 3 parts of the Comedy.
It’s a great book but not an easy reading. It has a lot of references that you might not know. I was reading ebook and don’t recommend it, if you want to read it, I advise you to read in paper, so you can understand better what author wanted to say (translators notes). There are lots of biblical characters and many “known” personalities from before 1300.

Yes! I finally finished the entire Divine Comedy. I started many months ago and got stalled halfway through Purgatorio, but then I took the free online class from Hillsdale College, and that gave me the context and motivation to pick it up and continue to the end. And wow, Paradiso was actually quite stunning. Dante had a view of God (truly awe-inspiring and beyond what we can understand or that we can express in language) that desperately needs to be revived in our day. I didn't give it five stars for two reasons - while much, much of the poem is really applicable and interesting for today, the sheer amount of Florentine politics is excessive, and while I really liked this translation by Robin Kirkpatrick, I thought the notes were lacking in some areas.
