challenging dark reflective slow-paced

In order to fully enjoy this book, you will need to study a large amount of history, study the wording he uses, and immerse yourself into Dante's personal life. As a pure enjoyment factor, it is a 2-star rating for me. However, it's clear to see why this is lauded as a work of genius. It certainly is impressive in many regards. Also, this edition I read was wonderful, as it provides wonderful visuals to help grasp Dante's experience.

love the glorification of fanfiction writers back in the day, dante a real one fr wasn't very comedic imo tho

What a waste of time. The content is boring as hell. It's just about the author talking about how pious he is to get a personal tour through hell while lording over all the sufferers. It's not a particularly beautiful read either, the prose is mediocre at best. I bet it's incredible to read on Italian, but not in English

DID NOT FINISH: 15%

I wasn't prepared for so much poetry. Not my cup of tea.

this is a beautiful translation.

Oh. My. God. I finished it. Took me more than half a year. But I loved it. Except few Cantos in Paradiso, every line of this book is pure genius. Dante was a story in himself. The way he captured the scenes and the emotions. And John Ciardi's translations and explanation.. He went above and beyond.. Believe me, cuz I referred to three different translations. I loved the whole experience. Yes, reading Divine Comedy is an experience, one I am lucky enough to have been through. Thank you, Mr. Ciardi's, for making this epic so real..
