Maybe it's because I'm going through Wheel of Time now too, but for the first half or so of this book I was just like "oh that happened beat for beat in WoT," and seeing similarities to Tolkien and Game of Thrones as well. I can't really complain there because they're popular for a reason, it's good content. Then we finally got to the part of the series that makes it unique with it's own spin and it settled into its own thing finally. I wish there was a touch more worldbuilding done but maybe that's just because I love a well-explained magic system, and I think the writing has flaws at time but overall it's a good book and I'll be reading the rest of the trilogy with time

a good epic of friends, separated by villainy, fighting their way back to each other and through lots of trials and tribulations.
