Rudimentary in everything not concerning the world and it's history. Every character is flat and forgettable as much as I wanted like some of them, and the attempts to show scale were weak. Despite the myriad flaws, I still somewhat enjoyed the read for the uncovering of all the mysteries constantly being introduced, even if it contributed to my detachment from some of the events.

This was an easy fantasy read, though definitely a slow burn. Sometimes it dragged, but then it would surprise me with an unexpected attack or a death I didn’t see coming, which kept me invested. I thought the Tenets were a really interesting way to show what oppression looks like, and the characters each had their own unique arc that I enjoyed following. It’s not a new favorite, and I’m not sure if I’ll continue with the series, but I didn’t hate it either. It scratched that classic-fantasy itch without demanding too much from me.

it’s like someone wrote YA but with a bunch of adult-ish themes. the plot is painfully predictable and transparent, the world building is fine, the prose is flat, and any character development that is debatably there is almost pointless overall. I doubt I will be continuing the trilogy
