Rarely have I ever felt so deeply connected to a character and a family in any novel, much less a ya. These characters are deep and complex, lending themselves to an authentic and nuanced exploration of the effects of racism on individuals, families, and communities over the course of individual incidents as well as over the course of generations. I loved Starr. I loved Kahlil. I loved every single member of her family. The way the children in Starr's family were loved and encouraged especially spoke to me. I cried when they cried and laughed when they laughed and fell hard into their world. This book is an absolute gem. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to read it too.

I remember finding some moments corny, but overall a very good read!
I’m pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this book. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator really brought the story to life.

This is a perfect book.
Nope, I'm not being hyperbolic or dramatic. I listened to the audiobook, performed by Bahni Turpin and that made it even more perfect.
The Hate U Give should be required reading for just about everyone, as it's so intensely relevant to what we see sprawled across the media every day. This novel can't be written off as #BlackLivesMatter book, so if you see someone trying to spin that nonsense tell them to quit it. This is the story of a young girl caught up in the all too familiar story of unchecked police power.
If you have the chance, listen to the audiobook version as the narration was 100% amazing. She brought all of the characters to life in a way that I felt so connected to Starr and her family that when they were in her house talking, I felt like I was part of the conversation.
I loved this. Read it. Just do it.
