I listened to the audio of this book, having read the other books in this world by the author. I really enjoyed listening to the audio, the narrator did an excellent job bringing the story to life.
This book can be read as a standalone without needing any knowledge of the author's previous work, or it does also add an extra level of detail to the main series (A Kiss of Iron) there are no spoilers for the main series in this book.
I loved that this was a true enemies to lovers story, Zita has been planning Sephyr's murder for a decade after believing he killed her sister. When she is betrayed and caught in her attempt, her punishment is to be Sephyr's "pet".
The spice and the romance was perfectly balanced, at times I did feel myself wishing Zita would open her eyes and see the obvious, but there was some excellent tension, and Zita's reluctance to give up on her plans felt true to her character, and her character growth was realistic and not rushed at all.
I would definitely recommend this book if you have enjoyed Clare's other books, or if you a lover of spicy romantic fantasy!

A toxic slay!!!!! one you gotta read in no more than three sittings, though, because once you’re in, you’re IN, but then once you’re out, not a wholeeee lot pulling you back in plot-wise, even though i do actually think the character work was really solid here, especially with our female lead. genuinely compelling and complex, dealing with issues of self-hate, desire vs self harm, among other things. tempted to up this to a 4 just to offset any potential “1 star this is problematic porn bc he’s mean!!!” thoughts lol

Omg, this is a first read by Clare for me and I really loved this and I’m planning on reading more of her work!
While the trope featured in this book isn’t usually something I would read, this author did a great job with it.
After reading Clare Sager's A Kiss of Iron book, I was an immediate fan and couldn't wait to dive into more of her books. This book is spicy and HOT. I am total fan of an FMC that is strong, tough, and unashamed of her body or to use it. It didn't matter what the MMC Sepher threw at her or much he tried to break her, Zita stood her ground and made sure he knew that she would never break. As the story progresses we begin to see a softer side to the MMC. Their relationship works because they both see their sharp edges and are willing to be cut for each other. Unfortunately, I did not like how much Zita punished Sepher for his actions nor did I like how she chose to do so, I didn't feel that the punishments were fair especially considering she tried to kill him. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it if you are looking for a fantasy read with LOTS of spice, just check the TW first.
