turned from a beach read to a park read as i moved away from the coast in the middle. really loved this.
The main character got on my tits by the end but the writing was insanely beautiful throughout

Had to put this down 3/4 of the way through and pick it back up again a week later because the rawness, sensitivity, and openness translated straight into torture for me, at this time in my life. Aciman is one for longing, to say the least. His way of capturing humanity always punches me in the gut, it leaves me thought-ridden and desperate - I'm both deeply afraid of myself, and thankful at the same time.

I read this book after reading Call Me By Your Name, which I am so grateful for because, honestly, if I were to have read this first, I would have probably passed on that beautiful masterpiece.
Throughout the whole book, I felt detached from the characters. I found that this book was more or less a repeat of CMBYN (especially the first story which, unsurprisingly, turned out to be the best one). Regardless, I think the book is exactly what the title suggests: Enigma Variations; however, do not expect any resolution or settlement to said enigmas. I found that after the first story I kept questioning the purpose of these stories, or what they were attempting to provide to the reader. It wasn't that entertaining. There was no emotional connection to any of the characters, especially the main character, and overall, it was simply too mundane and too boring. Its good if you want to kill time, but otherwise I wouldn't read it again.
