The first half of the book was a bit confusing for me to read, as it took me a while to realize the world that we are in. The monsters, and the fantastical features of the plot were merely subtlety mentioned which took me out of the reading sometimes.

However , the second half of the book kept me back as I was finally able to piece everything together, slowly but surely. I really like the relationships and the small lense of what studio systems were like, so it was nice to see Luli take control (albeit a little) of what she wanted when it comes to her films.

i’m not really a fantasy girl, however, the magical realism in this novel was cool to read!

I am yet again, swept away by Nghi Vo's writing! What I love the most is that she does not hold your hand or over explain. She simply allows us momentary entry into a world that she created without an expectation of understanding. It leaves us wanting more, but we must be content with the brief glimpse of magic!
