This was a beautifully dark story with a gripping main character. I found myself simultaneously afraid and intrigued by where it was going, and the story was quick and thrilling. Though I found it to be more atmospheric than plot driven, I enjoyed it very much. I recommend to those who like Evelyn Hugo and other tales of Hollywood stars.

Dark and whimsical and queer and absolutely full of old-Hollywood grit and glam. I loved the blurring between human, monster, and myth.

4.5 - started off a little bit slow. It eventually picked up and I’m glad to have journeyed with it until the very end. As an asian queer women I really, really appreciate this book and the history that it offers. I really got a kick out of the fact that I’m from SF where I stated the book and finished it in the heart of LA.

unassuming in its shelf-based allure on a casual rambling perusal of one of my fave independent bookstores. picking it up and putting it down several times while browsing, i ended up grabbing it and hoping it kept me engaged enough to finish. one of those where i left thinking "this could be really really good .. or could be completely not worth finishing."
oddly captivating read.
not a time period or premise i typically care to look into. at all. not sure what to do with the fantastical interjections early on. not sure where the ambition, focus, or character transformations were going to go. and... really loved the journey. in a curiously mundane... and humorous.. and cautious.. and emotionally satisfying.. way.

uncommonly compelling, Vo has knitted together a cast of characters and events that pull readers through page. after. page. experience after experience. and one interaction after another... to where you occasionally pause to wonder how you got here .. while remembering you are not actually meandering through their realities with them.

glad the Siren called persistently enough from the shelf for me to not miss this one.
