O'Neill blends charm and serious situations beautifully in her illustrations and storyline. The pace is just right, and the ecological message is clear yet not quite beating you over the head. She conveys the sense of out-of-placeness the young heroine feels from losing her mother and having to move away from the ocean she loves. Other characters are appealingly presented despite the fairly short story, and are pleasingly diverse.

For fantasy, graphic-novel, and ecology fans approximately grade 3 and up.

So many things I love about the book --

the adorable illustrations (just gorgeous)
the community clean-up -- brings the disasters in Puerto Rico and other coastal communities home
the environmental message -- not just that we must change, but ways in which we can change
the clear love of the sea and worry about the ways in which we are damaging it
the lovely, gentle, implied lesbian relationship from 2 positive role models
the people of color thoughout the book
the realistic depiction of grief at the death of a parent, and of depression.

It's an amazing bundle of feelings and story, especially given the somewhat minimal text. The only thing I don't like is the one panel where the aunt is smoking. Strong work!

Thank you Margot for recommending this one! (It was great to meet you and see what Oni had to offer at BookExpo 2018!)

It was super cute and the perfect pick up I needed from the serious book I was reading before! Awesome for summer or the beach.

The art. The colors. The story. I'm so excited for this to come out. Got an ARC at BookExpo and the world is in for a treat with this one.

I've liked each of Katie O'Neill's works more than the previous one I read, it turns out! I'm so happy to see that her other works have more substance to them, because I really, really do love her art style. It's so sweet and soft and magical feeling. The message in this one was nice as well. It was a little more in your face than the other two I read, but it's still an important notion to get out there. I enjoyed that she was able to explain about the destruction of our coral reefs while also injecting her own style and whimsy and fantasy into it, so it didn't just feel like a lecture.

A great book for introducing children to climate change/water pollution. The book explains the seriousness of the topic without making it scary and in a language that everyone can understand. A book I would recommend to parents who want's to read books to their children with a bit more substance.
