3.5 Stars really.
The first half of the book was really confusing and very, very slow. However it got better after Lena slowly understood how wrong her world, and everything she thought she knew was. I thought the progress of her realizing this was beautiful and very well done!
AT first I didn't really like Lena. While I understood how she wanted the procedure, she seemed kinda off to me at first. Unbalanced. Maybe it was suppossed to be this way. After Alex came into her life she seemed more sure and I began liking her then. As for Hana...I actually can't really stand her. I thought it was weird what she said at their evaluation and I was a firm believer that there was more than just her going to forbidding parties. Maybe there will be. We'll see. At first I didn't like Alex as well but now I totally love. He seems really lovely.
Gracie kept me confused. I thought first that she was Lena's sister, then her cousin, but Williams granddaughter? Either I hadn't paid enough attention or there was some mistake in the book.
As for the world. I haven't quite worked out what is fence din and what not? Is it only Portland? If so, what is the rest of the world. If it's not just Portland, how big are the Wilds? Is it like Disctrict 13 that just got wiped out and forgotten? I hope to see this explained further in the next book.
Also the rules are really confusing because you have people who are infected, who only get cured and they are okay and you've got people, sympathizers, who get put in the Crypts immediatly? Like what is the actual law on this? I don't understand what is worse and how this whole system works to be honest.
Anyway As I was halfway through I didn't think to continue the series but the last 200 or so pages kept me on the edge and now I am intrigued on how it will continue, thus 3.5 stars.

3.5 to 4. This theme has been done a bit but I think this was one of the 1st and I'm playing catch up. Reasonable plot, timing and characters.

This was an interesting little dystopian novel! It reminds me a lot of The Giver or Uglies with the government removing a society’s emotions and care for one another in order to create an easier to control populace. I have quite a few questions after reading about the government system though. Do they get to skip the cure or does this system eventually hold up itself? Do they really believe in the cause of curing love or do they use it as a tool to get away with heinous acts (which would be really on brand for the government)?
Also, that cliffhanger was mean.

“Most things, even the greatest movements on earth, have their beginnings in something small. . . And God created the whole universe from an atom no bigger than a thought.”
My love for Lauren Oliver's writing style will kill me one day, I'm sure.
I was glad to read a dystopia without guns and death waiting at every corner. And the quotes, THE QUOTES! so beautiful.
"You have to understand. I am no one special. I am just a single girl. I am five feet two inches tall and I am in-between in every way.
But I have a secret. You can build walls all the way to the sky and I will find a way to fly above them. You can try to pin me down with a hundred thousand arms, but I will find a way to resist. And there are many of us out there, more than you think. People who refuse to stop believing. People who refuse to come to earth. People who love in a world without walls, people who love into hate, into refusal, against hope, and without fear.
I love you. Remember. They cannot take it"

Why were the characters so freaking bland. I truly couldn’t connect to them at all. It seemed as if this book was written during the peak of last the early 2010s dystopia hype, except she tried (and failed) to capture what a true dystopia is supposed to give.
It seemed as if every political point which might have some depth just wasn’t explored. They all got overlooked. I wish we got know more about the disease and the cure, what it means to grow up with emotionally dented parents, how it usually affects children. What emotions are suppressed. But no, who cares about that if we have an “excellent” romance instead.
This is truly what instant love is about. Being two love and intimacy deprived teenagers who have never been in love. Her never even being the center of anyone’s attention, until he notices her and not her pretty best friend. Which is weird because she usually doesn’t get picked.
Now that is what makes her question everything she’s ever known, a boy. I mean I get that love is great and all but, would you risk it all for a new found love? When you’re deprived of it, maybe.
