I heard great things about this audio, and Davis did a fantastic job narrating. She narrates her past while also offering takeaways for the reader about facing life's challenges. She had a very hard childhood that was upsetting to read. Remarkable where she is today and her drive to get there.

“May you live long enough to know why you were born”

5 million trillion bagillion stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️‼️I loved her as an actress before but now - I have a deep respect and admiration for Viola Davis as a human being after reading her memoir.

Raw, honest, shocking, gut wrenching, inspiring … I can keep going. The things she experienced as a child, teen, and adult … wow. I am deeply deeply moved by her words and what she has endured. ❤️‍

Very honest look at both the highs and lows of life from a great actress who has experienced extremes on both ends. The first portion of this book put me off a bit because Davis leans pretty heavily into some self-psychoanalysis, which I’m typically not a big fan of. By the end of this book, though, after hearing her story, I realized that this framework has helped her grow into the woman she is today. It doesn’t matter if I prefer that framework or bot because it’s been useful for her. Despite that initial response, I found her unflinching look at her life to be captivating, frequently jarring, occasionally funny, and always real. The best memoirs help you understand the life experience and choices of someone who had a very different life from your own and Ms. Davis has succeeded in that regard. Well worth a read.
