I can see so many of the themes Soseki wrestled with at play throughout this story. It wasn’t my favorite of his works, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I like this book. A portrait of a man separated from the world by its change and his inability to meet that change. Neither nostalgic for the past nor heavy handed in critiquing the future. Just as he says - a stray sheep. Like so many of the Japanese novels I have read from the early 1900s, the struggle to grapple with a world being changed still remains a persistently modern sentiment - then and now.

Sanshiro spends the better part of 100 pages trying to pay back Mineko only to spend the money on a wool undershirt. My guy would fit right in with 21st century 23 yr old college guys.
