This series is just not for me.

It's also quite inaccurately tagged on GR as Romance. There's no central relationship and no HEA.

Read for Popsugar 2024 Prompt 3: A book about a 24-year old

With all of the amazing reviews for this book, I expected so much more. I feel as if Laurell Hamilton was on to something great, but the writing took away from what could have been a wonderful book. I often found myself reworking the sentences in my head to make them better, then was quite confused when it all ended. These books of hers are labeled as romance, which I now realize is for her later books (which I have also read, in hopes of them getting better as people said. They did not.).

I'm quite surprised I even finished this book since I dozed off each time I picked it up.

I just couldn't get into the book, I was disappointed I guess I like vampires but in this book it was very pro human.

There are a lot of weird body-shaming comments in the book. And weird religious undertones. I love paranormal & vampire books but something about this book was lacking

Didn't really hate it or like it if that makes any sense. The storylines just didn't make sense. Why are the people that hired her to help solve murders also trying to kill her. I get it that they're vampires but why.? Why torture Anita if she's in this case trying to help you find the vampire murderers. I don't know, that is really bugging me. The series with Anita Blake is always recommended. I finally tried it and I don't think I'm going to continue with the series. Maybe at a later date but it did not grab me.

I like the idea. The writing wasn’t terrible. And I didn’t hate the main character.
However, the dialogue is kind of cheesy, And there are so many different creatures thrown into this series that it’s overwhelmingly unnecessary. It’s a good premise, but not very well executed.

There is too much going on in this book that it doesn't make sense. Apparently, you're just supposed to know everything that's already going on before reading the first book in this series. I had no idea what I just read. Fortunately, I only bought the first 2 books of the series bc I was not impressed by the first book at all. I don't even know if I want to even attempt the next book or not seeing as how I just read a bunch of jibberish it feels like.
Too many characters and too much going on to be able to keep everything straight. If the book were later in a series where the author had already established the characters and the stories it would be better but it's not like that. I don't even think id give this 1 star if I had another option.
