As a student with different learning styles than a traditional school - and a teacher who has taught numerous students with different learning styles than a tradition school requires - I was intrigued when I found this book. My fascination with the story premise was heightened from having spent a year of my life in Japan. Kuroyanagi writes from personal experiences familiar to too many students in America today. Her descriptions of the non-traditional school her mother finally enrolls her in provided encouragement for me both as a student and a teacher. It also served as a reminder to me as an adult and an educator that my responsibility was to every student within my circle of influence. I have made a practice of rereading this book every couple of years, just as a reminder.

দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের সময়। জাপানের সংস্কৃতিতে জানালার ধারে কেউ থাকা মানে সে হতাশা এবং ব্যর্থতায় ডুবে থাকা কেউ। কিন্তু সাত বছরের ছোট্ট তোত্তোচান খুব আনন্দ আর উৎসাহ নিয়েই
স্কুলের জানালার ধারে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকত। তার অনবরত দুষ্টুমিতে বহিষ্কার হতে হল তাকে। আর তখন ই মা নিয়ে তাকে ভর্তি করে দিলেন তোমায়ে গাকুয়েন বিদ্যালয়ে।
সে এক অন্যরকম স্কুল। ফটকে অন্য স্কুলের মত ইটের থাম নেই। আছে জ্যান্ত দুটি গাছের গুড়ি। আর ক্লাসরুমগুলো একেকটা রেলগাড়ির কামরা। আর স্কুলের প্রধান শিক্ষক- তিনি আরেক অসাধারণ মানুষ। প্রথম দিনেই তোত্তোচানের মনে আসা সমস্ত এলোমেলো কথা মন দিয়ে শুনলেন পুরো চার ঘন্টা। আর কোন ধরাবাঁধা প্রশ্নও করলেন না ভর্তি নেয়ার জন্য।
প্রথমে মনে হচ্ছিল ছোট্ট একটা মেয়ের অবচেতন মনের আলাপ শুধু। ভাল লাগছিল - প্রতিটা পাতায় নিজের ছোটবেলার অনেক পাগলামি আর আবোল তাবোল চিন্তার কথা মনে করে। কিন্তু ধীরে ধীরে বুঝতে পারলাম বইটাতে আরো অনেক গভীর কিছু আছে।
প্রতিটি শিশুর জীবনে এরকম স্কুল আর এরকম একজন অন্তত শিক্ষক থাকা দরকার।
সম্ভব হলে এই স্কুল্টা আর এই শিক্ষকের সঙ্গে একবার দেখা করতাম। কিন্তু সব সৌভাগ্য তো আর সবার হয় না।

I read this when i was in elementary school. It's lovely.
I got this recommendation to be in deeper of education system and indeed give ambience of good education.
Start with first grade girl who got departed to other school. Even if the main figure is a child, but the story really intense and the school program that provide real-life experience. Interestingly the background takes place in first world war.
The real definition of must-read-novel to future teacher or lecture. I got a LOT of insight how ideal school with approach to student through personality development aspect.

I had no idea that this was an autobiography when I first picked it up off of my brother's bookshelf- and I didn't figure it out until she revealed it in the acknowledgments. I found myself wondering many times during the book: how has Totto-chan not been kidnapped or died yet? (due to all of her shenanigans of course) Overall though, the representation of a child's mind was amazing and I quite enjoyed reading this story.

buku non fiksi pertama yang aku baca sampai selesai, what a lighthearted book. untuk pertama kalinya aku pengen jadi pengajar:( mr.kobayashi really open my eyes towards being a good teacher. mama itu pengajar tapi aku gapernah bisa mikir kenapa mama suka jadi pengajar, soalnya aku nggak suka anak kecil, ternyata ga semua anak kecil menyebalkan atau nakal. semua tergantung tempat mereka belajar dan lingkungan tempat mereka belajar :(
