I remember I’ve wanted to read this book since I was in elementary school, and finally now I had a chance to read it. Had I read it back then probably the experience of reading this book would be different.
It touches important issues about early childhood education and how war is nothing but destructive. Told through a child perspective as well as the grown-up reflection on it, this book is heartwarming yet inspirational.

How do you define freedom? How do you define the educational system? Tomoe Gakuen was special, it had a different system of unconventional education. This method seems odd enough, but the founder, Sosaku Kobayashi, knew it’s always important to develop and encourage children from an early age that the idea of school is always fun and learning is indeed fun.
We learnt and went through Tomoe Gakuen based on Totto-chan perspectives and how her interactions with the headmaster, friends, and family eventually made her a much better person. It’s hopeful, it’s melancholy, but more inspiring. All children should be treated equally.
On a sadder note, the period of time when everything was told was during the war. When I thought it was fiction but turned out to be a memoir, my heart broke.

This is a story for everybody. Kids and adults. Teachers and students. The language is simple but the heart and soul conveyed are big and complicated; in the best way.
Somehow I would compare it to The Glass Castle only that instead of learning and teaching through pain and neglect, here the reader and the characters learn through kindness and attentiveness.

I got this recommendation to be in deeper of education system and indeed give ambience of good education.
Start with first grade girl who got departed to other school. Even if the main figure is a child, but the story really intense and the school program that provide real-life experience. Interestingly the background takes place in first world war.
The real definition of must-read-novel to future teacher or lecture. I got a LOT of insight how ideal school with approach to student through personality development aspect.

Mau sampai berapa kalipun membaca buku ini, tidak pernah bisa saya mewakilikannya dalam kata-kata lain. Keistimewaan karya Tetsuko membuat saya tidak bisa berhenti kagum, bahkan tak jarang, buku ini saya baca berulang-ulang. Sekarang, saya hanya bisa menuliskan seperti ini.
