Very sweet and nostalgic. I think the part that touched me most was actually
Spoilerthe afterword, where it is revealed that Tomoe was only open for 8 years before being burned down in WW2. It seems so cruel that such a beautiful and idyllic thing would be tragically short-lived like that. But it is also beautiful that Mr. Kobayashi was able to make a great impact in that short span of time. Those 8 years must have had enormous impact to the students that went there, as I can tell it had for Ms Kuroyanagi.

I went into this book blind without knowledge of the author or setting. The stories were super endearing and told with the carefree perspective of this curious child. I loved how each story highlighted an important example of different choices educators could make given different situations and to really turn "adult" perspectives upside down. I wish I had learned earlier in the book when these stories were from as it's even more impressive knowing it was wildly against standards at the time. Highly recommend, especially for those who might be around children.

I really like this book. As someone who doesn't really read stories, this was kind of a good one for me. I was kind of tempted to stop but also kind of wanting to continue as I like the information it gives regarding teaching methods. The stories resonates with what I would love to experience in school as a child. It was sad that Rocky and her polio friend died (I forgot the boy's name). I like the vibe of the school, I was imagining what the scenes looked like in my mind. I was kind of sad that she turned down for the story to be animated. I was kind of hoping that maybe someday it would have an animated version of the story, like the Ghibli's. Moreover, the stories are funny. I also like the song they sang before they eat, also the part when totto-chan sang it in front of the soldier, it was funny. That's all.

“Having eyes, but not seeing beauty; having ears, but not hearing music; having minds, but not perceiving truth; having hearts that are never moved and therefore never set on fire. These are the things to fear, said the headmaster.”

We had a part of this book as a chapter in my English book in school. I read the book a few years later and enjoyed every bit of it. This book was a pure delight.
