This was ... fine. I would have liked more from the Chicago setting. Not sure why the obnoxious old school cop had to be introduced to be irritating until the main character was given a better partner.

The two cops were pretty stupid in the big climax, and I really hate when the murderer is
Spoilerraving lunatic crazy.
I guessed most of the whodunnit from the moment a certain character was introduced.

The main character is deeply traumatized from the death of her son through violence, the end of her marriage, and the death of her former partner by suicide. But the trauma felt like an on again, off again thing. ("Oh yeah, my character is traumatized, need to throw in something about that.") She deliberately chooses to live in the house where she can look at at the oak tree where her son bled to death. O-kay. (It was not their home, just a random house she now feels she must live in.)

And there is a dead cat. A stray, so we don't feel too bad that a murderer killed it?

At this point I don't think I'll go on to book two.

An exciting new hard-boiled crime series by Tracy Clark. Fast-paced, twisted, with red herrings to keep the reader on their toes. I loved it!

Hide is a pleasant surprise! I didn't quite know what to expect from this first novel, but Tracy Clark delivers an engrossing story with complex characters and quite a bit of tension all around.

I really love the writing style here. Clark does a great job at introducing us to Foster, our main character, and the emotional struggles she' going through. There's this push and pull between what her complex emotions and the work she does; it's one of the points that makes her such a layered and relatable character.

For the mystery plot: it is a bit predictable due to the different perspectives. However, it's still quite a journey as the puzzle pieces slowly come together. It's very interesting to read about the investigative process and all of the partner dynamics and how that affects everyone's job.

I will say... the ending chapters and the resolution of the mystery is a little dramatic, personally, and rushed. Since so much of the novel is very down to earth, the sudden reaction from certain characters and how the climax happens are a bit disconnected from that. Still, the very final chapter is quite intriguing in terms of the possible consequences that can come from it.

I'll definitely be continuing the series!

Wanted to like this. There were too many unbelievable character’s actions. Things that were good/ok were dialog banter btw cops, and many characters’ storylines were juggled well. But protagonists were not smart
