Love a story that scares children into learning something, and this story does just that in a creative, unique way.
I “read” this by listening to NYPL’s live reading by Neil Gaiman and others. This was just a fabulous way to enjoy this book. I especially loved Rosario Dawson’s reading. She totally brought to life the story by her expressive reading.
Thanks NYPL for this treat!

I finally picked up Coraline after letting it sit on my TBR for way too long. I figured the -BER months were the perfect time to dive in. I went with the audiobook this round and plan to check out the graphic novel next before I watch the movie.
Here’s the thing: I didn’t love it. The writing was good, but I just never felt as creeped out or drawn in as I expected. With all the hype, I was bracing myself for full-on gothic horror vibes, and instead it felt a little underwhelming for me. Maybe the movie will hit different, but as far as the book goes, it wasn’t quite what I hoped for. And yes I know it’s meant for middle-grade/YA. I still just expected more.
Sometimes that’s just how it goes with hyped books, right? Not every story is for everyone. 2.5 stars from me

An intriguing tale that somehow had a lot to say about enjoying one’s life for what it is.
