Perhaps just not my genre sweet spot. Probably a decent book for 10-15 year olds. A kind of standard horror trope for tweens. Surely better written than the mass market series, but still just a morality play on the feeling that the grass is always greener so make sure to appreciate what you have. Here, it’s applied to a young girl who is bored with her parents and somewhat ignored, but still very much loved and cared for.

“but how can you walk away from something and still come back to it?”

I read this after having watched a video with the author. The book was warm, kind and creative - just like its author seems to be. I enjoyed every described image like a fine cup of tea.

As a HUGE fan of the movie, I was insanely excited to see the actual BOOK for sale, at my workplace, in our kids Halloween book feature over in Seasonal (Walmart). The majority of the other kids Halloween books are all super cute and simple, so when I saw CORALINE sitting next to Daniel Tiger on the little cardboard shelf, I was a little surprised.

It reminds me of when I was a kidling, and we had stories written for kidlings that WERE on the darker, spoopier side, and we LOVED it. Not everything for kids needs to be sacchrin sweet.

I had heard about the original book from abitfrank on Youtube a while back (love their reviews!), and though I already moved the movie (absolutely fun as heck story and BEAUTIFUL stop motion animation), her review of the BOOK got me intrieged. Because I do love me a DARK story. GIMME THE SPOOPY STUFF! 💜

And let’s just say, the book did not disappoint. MUCH darker than the movie, and I could see why they needed to actually tone down some things (like blood, or ESPECIALLY the beldam’s hand… not a hand of sewing needles, which is still terrifying and awesome… but an ACTUAL hand. Guant, pale as heck, blood red nails as long as needles… her ACTUAL hand…).

And the artwork in the book itself… heck yes! Very disturbing and awesome. It has a very rough, scratched in with an inking nib feel (I do mean LITERALLY). Dave McKean nailed the uneasy feeling of the story.
