This deliciously creepy children's tale is lean and precise in its construction and deceptively keen in its prose. It hurtles the helplessly captive and slightly terrified reader through a creepy-crawly nightmare guided by the wonderfully smart and brave Coraline. I so look forward to reading this aloud when my mighty girl has outgrown those more tepid fairytales.
“Coraline wondered why so few of the adults she met made any sense.”
A delightfully creepy short story that marked my childhood (in a bad way: i only watched the movie and was forever traumatized, so i never picked up the book until now). It’s not what I expected (I expected to love it), but it’s not the worst book ever! I enjoyed some moments, and disliked others, and overall I liked Coraline’s character arc and her curious, adventurous personality, and could relate to her ramblings about life and adults. But the pace and writing style just weren’t my cup of tea, and made me feel detached from the story! So yeah I don’t regret reading it bc I loved the spooky vibes, but I was a bit disappointed:(
“How do I know you'll keep your word?" asked Coraline.
"I swear it," said the other mother. "I swear it on my own mother's grave."
"Does she have a grave?" asked Coraline.
"Oh yes," said the other mother. "I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back.”

a book for my favourite movie? yes!
"You know that I love you."
And despite herself, Coraline nodded. It was true. The other mother loved her. But she loved Coraline as a miser loves money, or a dragon loves its gold. In the other mother's button eyes, Coraline knew that the other mother loved her as a possession, nothing more, a tolerated pet whose behavior was no longer amusing.
