I am very choosy about my coloring books. I not only have to like the designs, but I have to be able to see myself being able to finish it, or color it, period. This is probably one of the few I've come across that not only has pleasing creative designs, but are feasible to color.

So, pros:

-Creative and well-drawn designs.
-Unique art style, as far as manga-inspired art styles go.

Cons:
-Designs on both sides of the page, so if you use markers, it's going to bleed through
-The paper is also pretty standard, nothing super thick.

Camilla d’Errico, award-winning comic and manga artist and Pop Surrealist painter has broadened her artistic horizons by creating a coloring book filled with surreal manga inspired black and white line work.

At 10x10 inches with 80 pages, this book’s theme contains an assortment of animals, (wolves, butterflies, birds and several types of aquatic species), wide-eyed girl portraits, repeating backgrounds, fruits and veggies and several types of strange designs including funky robots, and even trees growing out of girl’s heads!

Overall, Pop Manga Coloring Book has both good and not so good aspects. The book comes with a colorable dust jacket, and the quality of paper is thick and smooth, which should allow the colorist to easily use a variety of coloring implements without needing to press hard, or fear bleed through. There are plenty of images of all sizes and difficulty levels that have the potential to dazzle and challenge artists for hours. However, the binding is glue based (difficult to spread open flat), has images printed on both sides, has no page perforations, and some drawings are spread far into the book’s gutter. An easy and inexpensive fix can be obtained by having the book rebound with plastic spirals in an office supply store such as Staples.

While this book is described as appropriate for all ages, it may not be suitable for younger or inexperienced colorists due to the fact that quite a bit of the artwork has fine lines and is intricately detailed which may frustrate those aspiring to remain in the lines. It is important to note that the artwork is unlike more traditional coloring books created and often touched up by design software making them more uniform in shape, while D’Errico’s manga is more free flowing and sometimes appears as quick, unfinished sketches. Pop Manga also does not include color combination suggestions or coloring tips however, d’Errico does encourage everyone to be brave and color outside the lines, so feel free to jump right in and put your creative skills to the test, or just have fun going with the flow wherever it may lead you.

The opinions I expressed above are my own and have not been influenced by receiving this coloring book from Blogging For Books.

I readily admit to loving these adult coloring books. Sometimes you get a winner and sometimes not with them. I liked this one.
Let's see why.
I haven't ever really gotten on the whole Manga thing because I'm totally boring and it takes too much energy lately for me to decide what pants to wear.
But this is cute.
There is a melting Queen or King. I can't figure out which but it is my favorite.

One of those pages that must be a rule that is included of a food collage. (Thank the goodness of books that this one is not full of them!)

Then I started really looking at these cute little pages...and my mind went there. (This could go as horror. Little creatures trying to get the girlies ice cream. Then they must have done something to her mind. Because now she has a tree head.

Then she cries because the butterflies want to eat her brain.

There must be some hungry critters..because now the birds want to eat her brains. I'm terrified of stupid birds so this one is pure horror.

They took her soul.

And then ended up having tentacle sex.

I'm going to color the heck out of this book.

Pop Manga Coloring Book is an adult coloring book unlike any other I have seen. It is full of gorgeous art that blends cute, creepy, surreal and beautiful all together. Some pages you have adorable children with creepy monsters, others you have cuddly animals with sad, unsmiling kids. Each page in this book is amazing. There are so many little details in each illustration that you could sit and look at each one for ages before remembering that you are trying to color the page. Many of the pages are done in a sketchy, pencil feeling style. I love it! It adds to the surreal feeling of the art and reminds me that this is an unfinished project waiting for me to add the final touches. The pencil sketch feel adds a soft, home made quality that other coloring books lack, it doesn't feel mechanical or mass produced at all.

Camilla d'Errico has cute little mascots that accompany her work. The mascot for this book is Ayako. Ayako pops up periodically to tell you about a piece of art or to remind you that you can color outside the lines. Pull of the slip cover and look both the cover of the book and the underside of the slip cover.

I love this coloring book. It has an amazing blend of feelings in it. It isn't just candy sweet art or super creepy. It blends them together in a a unique way that comes out gorgeous. I honestly can't wait to drag out my colored pencils and start coloring! The only downside I see is choosing which page to color first!

I got this book free from Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely love adult coloring books or coloring books in general. This is by far one of the most beautiful I have ever see, let alone have the chance to own. My boyfriend said once I finish them all he wants to frame them to put on our walls! That's how stunning the illustrations are! There is so much potential on each page!!

I thought this was a coloring book, but it is a book about how to create manga. I know nothing about manga, but it seems to be a lovely book for those who are interested in it.

I received an ARC from NetGalley.

Camilla d'Errico is a rock star in the pop surrealism scene. Her illustrations are whimsical and organic. Her characters are bizarrely avant-garde and beg for crazy hair colors and imaginative color combos. In the classic manga style, the characters have large soulful eyes displaying tender emotions. When you flip through this coloring book you are transcended into another world.

My artwork blends the cute, creepy, and the surreal in a whimsical way that defies any logic or physics. ~ Camilla d'Errico

She encourages the artist to go wild with their choices, think outside the box, and to color outside the lines. If you're a fan of pop surrealism, manga, or anime I highly recommend this coloring book. It's pretty standard as far as coloring books go. The book is sized 10 x 10 inches, has 80 pages, and comes with a removable dust jacket. It is glue bound and some illustrations do extend into that area. Illustrations are printed double-sided but the page quality is really nice (white 160 gsm (110#) uncoated paper).

The only issue, that should honestly be a nonissue is Ayako, d'Errico's creative companion that graces some of the pages offering advice, encouragement & commentary along the way. While you will get a sense of how important this little guy is to Camilla it does take away from the overall aesthetic at times. Pop Manga is full of portraits, patterns, and the stunning artwork fans and collectors have come to love.
