Holy Backstory Batman!

This is another series that suffers from thicker-book syndrome. If I start reading a series and each book gets longer I wonder if it is work continuing the series. This was worse because all the books were the same until we came to Jack Frost, which is a good 100-150 pages longer than the other books. Why? Backstory.

I started reading Jack Frost and felt like I was missing a book in between books four and five. Clearly, a lot of time had passed and things had happened that I had not read about. However, the author provides the back story in the book. Two back stories, actually. Each take about 100 pages to tell. Is it worth it? No. If that much back story is needed, write it as a separate book. Jack Frost clearly came out too early and there needed to be a book between four and five.

There isn't much of a story to comment on, since so many pages were devoted to the past instead of the present. It was alright, but it just needed to be done differently.

"Jack Frost! The fair-weather Guardian!" North would playfully gripe. "Comes and goes when he pleasies!"
"The word, my dear North, is pleases," E. Aster Bunnymund would correct.
"Go lay an egg, General Rabbit Bunny," North would retort, and they would begin to amiably argue.

I love this series. I just do. But I have to admit that this was not my favorite of the books. I enjoyed getting more of a look into Nightlight, and subsequently Jack Frost, but I don't know, I just found this one harder to get into? Maybe I should have re-read Sandman before jumping in, but I found myself lost in terms of plot. The weird flashback with Katherine's diary was just... odd.

But that said, I loved Jack telling his story. I loved the relationship between him and Katherine. I loved that Katherine has come into her own, and shows how it's perfectly all right to be grown-up and still keep your child-like wonder. And of course, the rest of the Guardians are perfectly wonderful and seeing MiM again was amazing. The illustrations were adorable. Twiner is my fave.

So overall, I think the other books were better, but this still made my heart happy. Jack is my son. I want to re-read the whole series now.

4 stars from me!

As always Williams art is fantastic. I like Jack's story in here as well, it literally pains me how much sense it makes compared to what appeared in the series of novels.

Not what I was expecting, to be honest. I guess, in hindsight, I should have realized that Jack's story would be significantly different from the way it was in Rise of the Guardians, but I honestly never expected Jack to have been Nightlight before he was Jack. I do prefer the movie version of Jack's story, so basically I like to think of this in terms of an alternate universe kind of a thing.

But the illustrations are pretty fabulous. Some of them are really gorgeous, with the rest being nice enough.

What a lovely end to the Guardians series. This was beautiful and just as warm and lovely as the earlier books in the series. It was fascinating to see the ways the books are and are not like the movie, and I definitely like the books a bit better, myself. Just a wonderful comfort series that I'm sure I will come back to over and over again.

It was good, but I'm super confused. I thought that the picture books and the chapter books were complements to each other? But this book just completely changes from the novels.
