I received this book as an ARC, for an honest review!

What can I say, this book blew me away. I loved the wordbuilding and the steampunk-y vibe throughout! The storyline was easy to follow but not predictable in any sense; I was hooked from the first page, wanting to keep going until I finished it! (The last few chapters might have broken my heart but I still loved it from start to finish).

The characters were real, which is something I always crave in fantasy books, and the relationship/dynamics between them was unbelievable! Hallie and Kate are such an interesting pair, their relationship evolving throughout from enemies to friends to who knows what in book 2.

Only thing personally I felt was distracting was the cursing (eg blasts, stars, blasting moon and stars). other than that 4.5/5 stars <3!

Slowburn, steampunk, romantic fantasy/Sci-fi

This had elements of so many other things I enjoy. The adventurous feel of Atlantis: The Lost Empire meets the hot-headed banter of Han and Leia meets the discovery of hidden cultures from The Last Camel Died At Noon by Elizabeth Peters.

This feels like a quick read but there's plenty of plot. The sci-fi/fantasy aspect is very approachable, although I'm not sure it would appeal to people who aren't already a fan of those genres. I didn't feel like I was missing context for the new dialect of the world.

My only complaint is the formatting, mostly around the italics. Some things were italicized that didn't need to be. Others weren't that probably should have. This was a minor annoyance and nowhere near bad enough for me to stop reading.

I suppose the ending is a cliffhanger but this book still feels complete.

  • World building in the book is great, I found myself asking more about the world these characters live in than the characters themselves at points.
  • The characters are fleshed out nicely. I did find myself wanting them to develop, rather than just commenting in their head that the need to develop.
  • The last 100 pages felt quite rushed, which did result in a bit of a fizzle of an ending.
