This book contains an adventure reminiscent of Disney’s Atlantis, and a romance like the one from Anastasia. But the stakes are much higher!

I loved the characters, the dynamics, and the banter.

Looking forward to reading book two!

the book just didn’t catch my attention and i was in a reading slump

Love the steampunk vibes and how the characters mingle with each other. I just wish there was more focus a bit more on the city life...

A friend was the one who introduced me to this book by sending me a TikTok the author posted. Just based on that video I knew I had to check out Cities of Smoke and Starlight and so I immediately went and bought it on my Kindle. And I have to say I'm so thankful my friend sent me that video because I absolutely loved this book. I thought the story was interesting and the author created an interesting world that I hope we get to learn more about.

As for the characters I thought they were all well written but of course Kase was my favorite. I loved the slow progression between him and Hallie as they went from enemies to reluctant colleagues to friends (that clearly like each other but haven't figured it out yet). I knew going in that there was no love confession or kiss in this book but even still I groaned in frustration at each almost kiss they shared. Despite that I personally still very satisfied with the romance aspect in this book. Most likely because one, their relationship seemed to go at a natural progression and didn't feel rushed. And two, because I know there's a second book. I'm excited to read the next book.

A poor attempt at some basic SF. On a world settled a few hundred years back by people fleeing a now lost Earth, they lost tech then regained it. Somehow, though, there's some almost magical tech they don't seem to understand. Two warring human countries on one continent send people down to find a city of non-humans who end up looking human and speaking the human common tongue though separated for hundreds of years after humans tried to kill them.

The main characters, Kase and Hallie, are too simple and cardboard. Then again, so are all the rest. So are the conversations, politics, and family drama. Nothing really stands out in a good way. It doesn't work.
