I enjoyed this book! It totally gave me treasure planet and Atlantis: the lost empire vibes. It is a very slow burn romance. I’m hoping for a little more in the next book. Overall I thought the plot was pretty solid, though it did drag on at times. I also felt that everything was resolved too quickly. Several times in the book it’s stated that the mission will take a long time, and no one expects it to be finished before spring at the earliest (it’s fall when the story begins) but then it miraculously gets resolved before winter even truly begins. I wish that had been a little more consistent. I also felt that there were several questions that needed answering that I’m hoping are answered in the next book. I’ll definitely read the next one, and I did enjoy this book regardless of the couple of issues I had with it.
I have no idea how I found this book, but I am so glad I did. I think it was the mesmerizing cover that made me fall for it. I am a sucker for good book covers..
Cities of Smoke & Starlight takes place on the planet Yalvara and it has been 1000 years since the last refugees came from the "First Earth".
We follow Hallie Walker, who is a gifted scholar and has a bubbly personality. When she loses her job, she is desperate to accept anything as long as she doesn't have to move back home.
Kase Shackley is the best pilot in the realm, but he always gets himself in trouble. After almost killing a pilot in training, he has to accept going on a dangerous mission to clear his name.
Kase & Hallie hate each other from the very beginning. But together with a team of experts, they go on a mission from the government to find the native Yalvs of Yalvara.
I instantly got "The mummy" vibes from this book, and it is so well written for being Earnest's debut book. I especially love Kase, as he is the grumpy / but has a big heart character. The banter between Hallie & Kase is extremely entertaining. The world of Yalvara is interesting with a lot of mysteries. Why have the people lost all their technology from the first earth for example?
If you want adventure & slow-burn romance this book is for you! (There are also dragons...)
I immediately ordered the second book. Realms of wrath & ruin
An easy 5/5! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you are after a enemies to lovers sci-fi novel mixed with magic look no further than Cities of Smoke and Starlight. Kase and Hallie both have different reasons for accepting a mission to fly to a lost country and form an alliance. Kase is escaping charges after a horrible accident and Hallie needs money to continue her studies. Both will grudgingly need to reach a truce because this mission is more complicated and dangerous than it seems. Will they be able to form a new alliance and prevent a war?
For me the novel started out slow, which I get. The author needs to introduce the characters and set the seen but once the group leave on their mission the novel takes off. Magic is a plot line that I gravitate towards so I loved the concept of sci fi mixed in. It had twist and turns that I was not expecting and baby was this a slow burn. It has great action that makes you feel like you are right there in the middle of it. This novel has something for everyone! Let me know your thoughts!
the execution of the setting in this book was done beautifully and it kept wanting me for more and more and moreeee ;)

It’s not an action packed page turner but it kept my interest and I enjoyed it. There is magic of some sort in it which I typically avoid.

This book had me hooked like a little worm! It was a refreshing read since it is more unique than other books. I'm irritated that the author did us like that with some of the characters
The leads are atrociously annoying and their squabbles are nowhere near appealing enough to want me to root for them to get together much less see where this is going.

The story started out slow but rapidly picked up pace once you get through the introductory chapters. By the end I realized it was almost 3am and felt a little crazy. Here’s hoping the second one is just as good!
