I love the cover art, it’s what drew me into this book. Discovered this book from Instagram, marketed by the author as an Anastasia love story. I couldn’t resist!

The flirting and slow burn romance was a little juvenile. I still liked it overall. But going into this knowing it leans YA definitely helps set expectations.

The adventure was fun at first. Definitely got more into it once our crew took off. But then felt the plot lulling again after the initial parts of the expedition where it felt a bit like nothing was happening, except a bit of repetition - arrive at new area, explore, get into a bit of trouble, run away to new area to set up. Repeat.

Characters and their back stories felt a little stale. It’s established very early on that each of them have lost someone close to them (a sibling) and then there’s small details revealed over the course of the story but it somehow lacks suspense or intrigue. I think we needed to have seen some sort of mannerism or unusual tendency from the character which is later explained by previous trauma. A lot of the story felt repetitive - death of sibling. Then saving each others lives (stone monster, air craft fallling out of trees)

Also a very predictable “twist”.

This book had potential - which is why it got more than just 1 star flat. But it was so frustrating. It's advertised as a slow burn, which it is if you want them to bully each other for 440 pages and then kiss out of the blue with no transition. The worldbuilding/magic was confusing, and I hated it. It was obviously supposed to be like... Mysterious? In a way. But that's just not how it came off. Also, the characters are kind of terrible. The only ones that I liked died
(*cough cough* Zeke and Ebba *cough cough*)
, and the one I hated the most (Kase) survived. Which is fair, since he's the main character and all, but he doesn't have any personality outside of 'my hair is curly and I run my hands through it 24/7 all the time non-stop.' But why would you kill the only characters with potential?? The dialogue was extremely cliche and repetitive (if I had to read one more pseudo curse word, I was going to cry) and I was so tired of the over dramatic yelling by the two main characters. Anyways, overall very frustrating story, and if I could go back and DNF this I would, but the potential is obvious enough that I can see why people like this.

The beginning was a bit confusing simply because of world building but once the adventure starts it’s very gripping and held my attention excited for the 2nd book

Meh. The characters are super annoying And not seeing the point in continuing.

Kept the library book wayyyy too long and finally decided it was time to let it go.

Notes to self: DNF. Took 1 1/2 years to get through 2/3 of the book. Don’t like any of the characters. Is this YA? Felt YA, but I like a lot of YA. This is NOTHING like Dune, P&P, Rogue One or whatever other comparisons the author has made for their book.
