This book turned out slower than I expected. I kept anticipating more movement in the story, but instead, we remained in Venda for the entire book. While the Komizar was an undeniably fascinating character, I was relieved when Lia finally stabbed him—he absolutely deserved it.

As for Kaden, I still can’t bring myself to like him. At this point, I almost wish he would embrace being a true antagonist. I don’t enjoy seeing him anywhere near Lia, and while his feelings for her are clear, I really don’t want him to be her endgame. His Morrighese heritage didn’t sit well with me either, and that vision of him holding a baby? With Lia in Venda??? Definitely unsettling.

On the other hand, I was so happy that Lia and Rafe managed to escape together. For a while, I genuinely feared they would be separated, and I love them as a couple. That said, I do hope Rafe doesn’t try to hold her back—Lia is clearly destined for something greater, and I’d hate for her wings to be clipped. Hopefully, they’ll find a way to make things work side by side.

Overall, while slower than I would have liked, the story left me eager to see where the third book will take these characters. I can only hope it delivers the ending I’ve been waiting for.

Good book thats fairly well written with good character development and characters that are consistent across books. Overall the story was a bit slow like many 2nd books in a trilogy but it wasn't too bad.

This book was better than the first in my opinion. The last book ended with Kayden kidnapping Lia and Rafe allowing himself to be captured in order to rescue her. I immediately had to jump onto the sequel.

There was a little bit of a slow start with Lia familiarizing herself with the Venda and commanding Komizar, who lowkey gave me anxiety every time he was featured because he was so unpredictable.  Rafe, meanwhile, continued the guise of being an emissary of the Dalbreck prince. I think the middle part of this book was relatively stagnant and honestly I didn’t understand the point of Pauline’s chapters, which were far and few between.

I started paying more attention once Lia was able to make some power moves and came to understand and even empathize with the Venda tribes clans more. I thought the plot was smart here, showcasing her ability to wield influence as well as the strength of her character. I thought this was something that was developed better than the first book.

I do wish there was more of a relationship between her and Rafe, but ofc as a plot, this was impossible considering they’re both prisoners. I liked the side plot of Rafe’s plan to escape too; very smart and only a reveal a book could pull off with his infiltrating soldiers.

The ending left be gagged I’m ngl. I’m going to need to start the third book immediately.

4.5 ⭐️

Mostly because I didn’t cry this time.

My heart rate though? Hella elevated at the end

Solid YA fantasy

The plot moved slow and I still ate it up.

The ending wasn't okay but I'll live. I've read worse.

I have mixed feeling on this book. It was definitely good, though weaker than the first book in the series. I think it suffered from middle book syndrome a little bit, especially around the halfway point, but the ending was strong.

This was so much better than the first book if you ask me. The world has started to make more sense, and Lia wasn’t as stupid as in the first one.

Yeah over all, I also just liked this better
- more intrigue, characters I liked (Aster) as well as ones that intrigued me (Calantha, Kaden). The obvious choice in this love triangle is Rafe - Kaden is a literal murderer who kidnapped her. That being said, I do think that Kaden has really interesting sides to him and I kind of care more about him as a character than I do Rafe - he’s a little flat in my opinion. Still not a love triangle fan, but it was alright in this one. Except for all the stupid crap with Rafe and Kaden - grow up?

Once again, this is written in such an easy-to-read style, which makes the reading experience relatively fast and enjoyable. That being said I honestly just skim the bits with the song of Venda and that - I don’t really care enough.

Interested to see where things go, hope my library will let me reserve that last book, have been having some issues.
