Never ever ever fails to impress me. The books keep getting creepier and more revealing and I can't deal with it. This book was generally too much, must be why I took so long with it. No words can express how attached I am to these characters and will always be. I love them so much.
* Up until 200 pages, I really didn’t get the feeling that it was truely reading HP. It was a bit mundane
* Umbridge — how can a teacher be this abusive!?
* Page 350 - it was interesting till 200 - 250 and then it became mundane again. I think it’s going to be everything happening at once in the second half of the book
* Most of what I read till now feels a bit unnecessary, it could have been 100 pages instead of 350 I have read so far. Feels really stretched out.
* It picked up pace when Hagrid retuned - page 389
* For some reason which I think will be revealed later, it keeps raining all the time!, it’s described as dark and gloomy and that can’t be a coincidence
* Thestrals - only those who have seen death can see them. But Harry was there when his parents were murdered so then why couldn’t he see them before?
* I also think Harry being able to sense Voldemort emotions and those emotions being projected through Harry is why Dumbledore kept avoiding Harry
* Occlumency — so interesting!
* Dumbledore is like a silent shadow in this book — guarding Harry and taking the blame for him. I could never imagine him getting arrested!
* Oh no no no. He did not, OFCOURSE he did NOT!!! In the words of Phineas Nigelleus "he’s got style"
* I cannot believe James Potter was a bully "his father had been every bit as arrogant as Snape had always told him" now I know why Snape loathes Harry - page 600
* Fred and George’s dramatic exit from Hogwarts! Such a fun scene
* I’m seem on seeing what Hagrid’s giant brother would be like 640, just goes on to prove how kind hearted Hagrid is
* O.W.L.S examination process was really interesting - pg 660. The little things about it — counter cheating spells, questions and tasks set for each witch and wizard — literally in awe! Wish I could go to Hogwarts
* Voldemort used Harry to hurt Sirius — argghhh. Sirius is the only family Harry has :(
* No no! Professor McGonagall. I hope she’s alright in the end 673
* Sirius — 742. I couldn’t be more heartbroken
* I am happy Dumbledore addressed the discrimination "pure bloods" have towards halves. I like how Dumbledore used house elf - Krecher as an example. I hate the stupid elf for blabbing to Malfoy’s wife — but I get where Dumbledore was coming from. It’s ever evident that because Harry felt so close to Sirius so he defends him. I loved Siri’s character too. But dying never makes anyone a saint. Harry sees Siris as black and white here. But I quite like the light of honestly Dumbledore sheds here — everyone is grey. No one’s all good.
* The Veil — honestly makes me want to ball my eyes out!
* I have always admired Dumbledore’s calmness and tranquility. His efforts to shield Harry from the horrors of Voldemort… it was always a given that Voldemort wanted Harry dead, but now it makes a little more sense as to why. The prophecy, but it still raises so many question. To me it’s part of the reason as opposed to the whole explanation
* J.K. Rowling has portrayed grief through Harry so delicately. It seems too real
* The last 100 pages were a hail storm. There was so much going on, a minuscule amount of questions answered yet a million remain unanswered!

This was a speedy read in time for book club and I made it by the skin of my teeth. Overall, it was not my favorite book but definitely a necessary one that had to happen to fill in all the gaps in the story. A certain someone’s death was unexpected, but makes sense. I’m told there are many more significant deaths to come and I don’t recall any of them from the movie so this is scary!
While some parts of the book felt a bit draggy, I loved learning more about the Ministry of Magic and St. Mungo’s Hospital. I wished they showed more of both in the movie!
The penultimate chapter was chock full of details — I’m curious why she chose to reveal all of those at the end and not slowly throughout. The chapter also had some really good quotes that will hopefully transfer over once I manage to take my kindle off airplane mode.
