Derek Landy has succeeded yet again at expanding his series with another spectacular novel. While making a slightly less compelling start than his normal novels, it built up with a strong and thoughtful narrative. As usual in the Skulduggery Pleasant Series, there is some violence and gore-- so a warning to the younger audience.
Valkyrie is still as witty as ever and gets plenty of action in this one- and the stakes are raised with another appearance of Darquesse.
The ending- I won't say for spoilers- is utterly spectacular and I cannot wait for the next novel in the series to be released in August this year (2013).

Possibly my favorite so far, not looking forward to finishing the series though!
When I read the first Skulduggery Pleasant book I really expected a ton of FEELS to fall down on my head and strike me dead - simply because I love a platonic affectionate teacher/pupil relationship to pieces and the Skulduggery/Valkyrie dynamic is really ace. But the first book left me with a reaction of 'oh. That's nice.' rather than the laughing, grimacing feelsy-ness I had been expecting. Mortal Coil irritated me with its Valkyrie/Fletcher/Caelan situation (A LOVE TRIANGLE? WITH A VAMPIRE IN IT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? NOT COOL.) but redeemed itself by dumping ALL of the Valkyrie/Skulduggery feelings on my poor, unsuspecting heart. And, so far, this instalment has me literally having to put down the book every few pages whilst I take a moment to inwardly squeal and flail about. There is so much about this series that causes me to feel embarrassed/irritated... I mean, I'm vain enough not to read it publicly because the covers... well, just look at them! but it's all pretty much made up for by the charm and wit of the books and the genuinely enjoyable character interactions.
ETA: Second read finished, just in time for book eight next week. It's still pretty damn powerful, and I think I noticed more details this time around - details that should very likely be relevant for Last Stand of Dead Men.
I'm not ready for LSODM. I'm really not. But at the same time, I can't wait. (Knowing that there will be one more book after LSODM, I'm relatively sure some people will have to survive. Probably.)

Just finished, and...
A more coherent review will have to wait for the re-read, I think. Because right now I have extreme problems putting my thoughts into words.
It was, well... more than I expected. Also, more serious, more plotty, more grown-up. There was still plenty of humour, and lots and lots of wonderfully gory violence, but overall, I'm now anticipating the next book with an equal share of fear and lust. (Can one lust for a book? One can, right?)
So many gutpunches in this one, for the reader.
God, I love Skulduggery.
I think I'm going to cry once this series is over in just two more books. Whichever way it ends, I'm going to cry.

Holy crap, that epilogue.
Non-spoilery: I love Valkrye. I guess there are people who don't, but I find her consistently endearing because she's complicated. She's the kind of female character that I don't see enough in fiction.

Finally finished. That took me a long time to get through. Now, I absolutely love Skulduggery Pleasant, my favourite series of all time. Thing is, this book was more of a filler novel than moving plot forward.
Of course, it was an amazing filler, the story, the characters, all amazing as usual. But there was little progress towards the final destination. And I am simply not a fan of filler arcs or novels.
There are a few important characters and plotlines introduced in this book that are really important. And I must say, these are the good bits. Everything with the Supreme Council is a major plot point. And then there is the Epilogue.
But that is all I can say without spoilers, so I guess straight on to reading more.

No matter how long it takes me to read these huge books (sometimes days, this time two months because I have been BUSY), I love them and always have fun reading them. Like the last book, though, the extremely long fight scenes can get a tad tedious towards the end, especially since I'm not a fan of gore and all that.
