This book came at a perfect time for my family! Trent had a doctor appointment last week and he was in the jungle room. While in the room, he started saying the noises for each animal and asking me what the ones he didn’t know make. I promptly found an app for that, and we’ve been exploring the app ever since listening to the sounds of all sorts of animals from chimpanzees to ibex to anteaters that live in the jungle to the farm to the mountains. And then we received Can an Aardvark Bark? in the mail, and it was such a happy coincidence! The book is a perfect addition to my new animal sound obsessed kid.

But in addition to my personal story of why we’re excited about this book the text is also filled with animal facts, fun to read, and illustrated by one of my favorite illustrators, Steve Jenkins.

An informative children's nonfiction book about animals and their sounds. I thought some of the illustrations made the animals looks kinda creepy though.

Review:
Children are sure to squeel, grunt, growl and make all manner of wild sounds when reading this entertaining bit of nonfiction. The book is in a question and answer format and is accompanied by Steve Jenkins' wonderful illustrations. Throughout the book, readers find out about animals that do and do not make various sounds. There are also other facts about the animals included in captions. These captions add a lot to the text and will be gobbled up by animal fans.

The illustrations fascinate me as a lover of paper art and collage. The porcupine is fabulous with its amazing quills. The texture of the boar is also fabulous. I think this, like many of the books Steve Jenkins has illustrated, would be a natural jumping off point for creating animal art.

This is definitely a book I am eager to share with students. Animals are intriguing to most children and this look at ways to communicate easily ties into our own ways to communicate.

Recommendation: If you are looking for engaging nonfiction picture books, Can an Aardvark Bark? is one you will want to purchase. It's sure to be a hit with children and adults.

What would you expect from a collaboration with Melissa Sweet and Steve Jenkins? The textures used to create the animals in this book are truly amazing! They look 3D; the wild boar is amazing! Of course, with the sounds that animals make, mating is mentioned quite a bit, as that is the reason for many animal sounds. That might generate some questions from younger students.

Informative and entertaining. The text invites children to respond. Sometimes we read the additional information, and other times we just named the animals. As always, the illustrations are top notch.
