The book, with its lack of chapters and trance-like prose, is hard to put down—I ended up reading it in a single sitting. It begins mysterious and alien, but closes on a human and philosophical note. The girl’s journey toward understanding what makes her human is at times heartwarming and at others heartbreaking. While the story leaves many questions unanswered, it doesn't feel feels like a plot hole or a cop-out. Instead, it seems intentional—as if the reader is meant to make peace with their unanswered questions about her external world and circumstances, and focus instead on her inner journey.

This feels like a hard book to judge. On one hand the creativity in the plotting of the story is amazing. The complexity of what isolation does to our main character and how long it takes her to feel human is heartbreaking. On the other hand, a lot of parts of this story take a lot of suspension of disbelief and the moment you start thinking a little more about it, it falls apart.
