Every time I get midway through one of these books, I decide to take an extended break from the series, and every time I reach the conclusion, I'm immediately compelled to pick up the next one! This series is quite vexing and I haven't even reached the fabled mid-series slump. Say what you will - Robert Jordan may meander for the first eight hundred pages, but he sure knows how to write a thrilling conclusion that brings together all the plot threads the Wheel has woven.

That being said, god, so many characters in this book are frustrating. I still don't get certain relationships (Lan and Nynaeve???? Min's obsession with Rand would be even more ridiculous if it weren't for the "destiny said so" aspect of ta'veren) and the constant "women are mysterious creatures that men can never understand" is tiring. I applaud Jordan for empowering women throughout the books: the series is replete with female characters who have agency and power. Nevertheless, he still doesn't do a very good job of writing women. The one exception is that Faile and Perrin, who start off this book with one of the more aggravating arguments in the series so far, develop into a loving and believable couple by the end.

The Fires of Heaven sits on my bookshelf, tempting me with 1000 more pages of exciting magic and questionable gender relations just as Lanfear tempts Rand al'Thor with the power to rule the world. Tonight, I will journey once more into Rhuidean.

Everything in & around Rhuidean (just a handful of the 50-something chapters) was what kept me from dnfing. The development of the worldbuilding & lore in these chapters & how they related back to Rand & the philosophical questions they posed was really interesting & engaging. Almost everything else was a slog.

I read the last two books of Wheel of Time back to back and I’m tired. Two long, action packed books with my favorite characters growing and learning. I will finish the series, by Light, but I do need a pause for now.
