This book was so beautiful and made me weep. Kinda have to suspend your disbelief - wondering why they wouldn't just y'know, text, or whatever, and that people would actually write such long, deep notes on the fridge.
But so well told. I thought the note thing might be gimmicky, but not at all.
BEAUTS.

A really quick read. It probably took me less than an hour, since some pages have only one line on them. A little unrealistic, but mildly entertaining.
This book has a very original premise. It's about a single mother and her teenage daughter. The mother works long hours delivering babies and the daughter is a busy high school student. With little time for face to face contact Claire and her mother resort to writing notes and letters to each other and posting them on the refrigerator door.
Unfortunately the story line isn't very original. You pretty much know what is going to happen as soon as you hear that the mother is sick. It was very nice to see the ups and downs of the mother and daughter relationship and how fear and grief spark anger and regret. As I was reading I wished that the notes on the fridge were just part of the book instead of the entire book. The mother left several notes saying "We need to talk, this isn't something we should discuss in notes." (not a quote). Then the notes would pick up after the discussion had taken place. I felt that I would have been able to invest a lot more emotion into the characters if I was able to get to know them on a deeper level. Perhaps the author didn't want us to get to know the characters too deeply so that all women could see themselves, their mothers and their daughters in these characters.
I'm a sucker for books told from the point of view of multiple characters so if I were to make this my perfect book I would probably have the book alternate between the points of view of Claire and her mom with the fridge notes sprinkled in.
All in all this was a very quick read and worth the time I invested in it. I liked it but it could have easily been the type of book to bring me to tears with some adjustments.

Claire and her mother exchange notes on the refrigerator door because with their busy schedules that's sometimes the only way they can communicate. Claire is a typical teenager with boy troubles and her mom is a working single mother that's on call frequently as a doctor. At first the notes are trivial: groceries to get, allowance needed, don't forget your keys! Then they become more serious as Claire's mother learns she has cancer.
This book is a quick and sad read. You know what's coming but it's still like a punch in the gut when you get there. As someone who has lost a mom to cancer, I was tearing up at the end of this book as it brought back many memories.
This book is sad for another reason too, which is how little Claire and her mom were able to communicate with each other. It seems that they were having major conversations on paper, which should have been had in person. It's too bad that many of these conversations took place on paper and I'm sure by the end of the book Claire regrets many of the decisions that she made. As she should.

A unique concept. The entire novel is written as notes left between a mother and her daughter on the refrigerator door. I also found myself teary up at some of the memories the notes evoked. I would recommend this to all mothers and daughters for a true appreciation of the special relationship mothers and daughters have.
Read this in 30 min, didnt realize it was so short but I guess greater things come in smaller packages. At first I was kind of annoyed with claire and how she would brush off her mom and act like a complete teenager but soon I realized, what else can you expect from a 15 year old girl. As the notes progressed you could see how their attitude changed and how they realized things could never be the same. I cryed a bit at the end and Im very happy with this quick read since I am a momma's girl.
